Full Notes
Good afternoon Kentucky. We're going to start today by several of us making comments on the announcement today from the grand jury and from the Attorney General on the Breonna Taylor investigation. And then after those comments and any questions I'm going to provide a brief COVID report. As Governor, you can do a lot of things and some people think you can do just about anything. But as Governor I cannot control decisions made by an attorney general's office, I cannot control decisions made by a grand jury, and I don't lead local law enforcement offices. But what I can control is how I lead, what I say, what I am committed to doing. I start with the humility and acknowledgement, that I will never feel the weight of 400 years of slavery, segregation, and Jim Crow. I will never personally feel that weight but I can listen. And I can try to hear. And I can be clear: That systematic racism exists in this world, in this country, and in our Commonwealth. It exists in unequal access to health care, in disproportionate incarceration rates, and it impacts everything: from wealth, earnings, education, even how long we live on this earth. My faith teaches me that injustices and inequalities must be addressed. The world that God calls on us to build is one without racism. One without oppression. One without violence. Since the start of my administration we have worked to combat some of these inequalities. We've restored voting rights, we've protected and expanded health care, and we have built an inclusive team. But as I listen, and as I try to hear, I know that there is so much more work to be done. There are hundreds of years of pain to be addressed. And my job is to continue to listen, to try to hear, and to do everything I can to build the type of world that I think everybody's kids deserve; one where we live up to our true values, one where we live up to our faith, one where we try to make a dream talked about many decades ago, closer to reality.

2020.09.16 18:09 nickmillerism I am 32 years old make $47,000 and live on Long Island and work as a finance assistant.

Money diary of myself and my boyfriend, D.
Income
Income Progression: I am paid hourly at $17 an hour with overtime available, which before COVID and starting again soon I work an average of 58-61 hours a week. D is also paid hourly at $29 an hour and has overtime available when asked.
Monthly Take Home: The month of August for me was $2,245 after taxes and 401k. D makes $3200 a month after taxes. I forfeit my health insurance and receive $150 a month because I am on D's work plan which is the same exact health insurance but shockingly cheaper because his company pays more into it.
Assets and Debt
Retirement Balance (and how you got there): 401k balance today is $17,991.51. I am now 100% vested because I've been at my job for 8 years. Company matches 1%, it's a small family owned business so I don't expect anything at all.Savings account balance: $12,300 in my personal, $2,900 in D's personal.Checking account balance: $400 in my personal, ~$3,300 in joint checking for shared expenses.
Credit card debt (and how you accumulated it): Explained below in expenses
Student loan debt (for what degree): I graduated at a SUNY school for journalism and photography. My dad paid for all 4 years and has never asked to be repaid. I think it was the worst mistake I ever made because 1: I was going through depression and other emotional issues 2: I never used my degree by way of graduating in 2010 and never was hired for a job I was qualified to do.
Expenses
Rent: $1,819 for a 900sq ft one bedroom second floor apartment with a large outdoor balcony. 5th year rent will be $1,940 which we know because we signed a 2 year lease this time and I negotiated down both years rent. Renters insurance: $135 for one year paid in April.
Health insurance: $755.56 a month, or $188.89 deducted per pay check from D's job. It includes medical, dental and vision.
Savings contribution: I was very good at saving during and before COVID. I would save $500-$600 a check depending on bills due that pay period. Now I'm just happy if I have money in my checking to roll over into savings at the next pay period. I set up auto-save for D $100 a week into his own savings account.
Debt payments:$387.02 balance on Chase Freedom and $3,900 balance on Target MasterCard (which are for revolving shared expenses and I'm slowly learning to stop. I have a habit of wanting more liquid cash in our checking in case of emergencies rather than use it for spending. I don't know why I'm like this and I hate it.) $3,966 on a Discover card that was a balance transfer from AMEX with 0% interest for 18 months. Beginning balance was $5,459 that D had been using when we first started dating 8 years ago, ran up the charge and just never told me about. He's been paying it down with monthly minimum automatic $200 payments until I have to balance transfer to another card (LOL COOL). I control all finances because he spends thoughtlessly and doesn't understand money.
Monthly expenses:
Electric: Summer months are $50-$100, winter months are $25-$45.
Wifi: $80/month Verizon Fios internet.
Subscriptions: We have Hulu free from having Sprint, Disney+ free for 2 years from signing up for Fios this year. HBOMAX, Amazon Prime, Showtime, Netflix, Apple TV my parents pay for and we use their logins and use a separate profile for streaming.
Cellphone: $67 auto pay monthly for my Sprint service. D's is $130 auto pay monthly because he pays for the phone as he goes bundled with his Sprint service plan.
Pet expenses: Chewy order of $67 every 3 months for 40lbs of litter, 2 packets of treats, 48 cans of food and a new toy. I buy her a new scratcher pad, toy or cute nonsense every so often in addition to this. She's my child and I work to make her life great.
Car payment: My 3 year Jeep lease is $278/month. The Jeep I traded in for this was owned and was given $7,000 as the trade in cost. I used that to cover my payments for the first 2 years and am now paying for it myself as of September.
My car insurance this year is $1,528 for the year. D owns both his cars outright and pays $76/month for insurance.Apple Music and iPhone storage: $11/month, I use.
Spotify: $10/month, D uses.
Weed/beealcohol expenses: $120 twice a month for bud we share. D spends an average of $150-200 a month on craft beer (please roll your angry eyes with me)
Day 1:
530am: Wake up after maybe my worst winery experience ever. I can handle my alcohol, have never thrown up and never been hung over. It was almost as if someone put something in my drink or it was bad wine. Shower, Skincare/makeup routine of CeraVe moisturizing cleanser, Pixi Glow tonic, FIT concealer, Anastasia Modern Romance palette, LashCraft big volume mascara. I stopped using so much makeup (foundation/full face) since the pandemic started since I wasn't going to work for 3 months and my skin is clear and beautiful for the first time in my life. Pop 2 Advil, feed our cat and head to work. This is the usual morning routine so there's no need to keep repeating it for this.
745am: Decide I need a cure of a bacon, egg, cheese, salt, pepper, ketchup on a roll. $4
8am: Fill my Yeti water bottle, get into my office and start my day. It's the last day of our sales month and I know I'll have long stretches of hours in my chair getting through the paperwork.
1pm: Work friends decide to order lunch. I go in on their order from NY Panini with a sandwich (thin chicken cutlet, fresh mozz, vodka sauce to dip. Absolutely heavenly). $15 including tip.
4pm: Get an alert from Chase that D bought beer at our local bevy. $20
8:30pm: Finally done, hit our imaginary number. Drive home, get ready for bed and much needed uninterrupted sleep.
Total: $39
Day 2: 5am: Wake up to the cat meowing in my face. Guess she didn't get fed her pre-breakfast when D woke up. 8am: Sit down in my office and be happy today will be slow. I had made a batch of cold brew over the weekend with Peet's Major Dickason's blend, so I pour that over water and add a splash of Oatly.
1pm: Lunch that I brought from home (chicken with mozz and a red sauce i made from our garden tomatoes) while reading The Southern Book Club's Guide To Slaying Vampires.
430pm: Leave work on time, get home to do household chores, catch up with D and relax a little before a late dinner out.
8pm: I'm trying to break the habit of getting home, getting comfortable and canceling plans to stay home so I change back into an outfit to meet up with my friend that I never get to see because our schedules never match up. We order roasted brussels sprouts, penne ala vodka, a paloma for me and a mojito for him. He ends up paying and I will owe him dinner next time.
11pm: Home, skincare, bed.
TOTAL: $0
Day 3:
8am: Settle into work, see there's not much going on today and read a decent amount of the book I picked up over the weekend. This week it's The Southern Book Club's Guide To Slaying Vampires. I make good use of 2 of my local libraries and keep track of how much I would have spent if I bought books or bought/rented movies. So far I've saved $782.
12pm: Weird lunch of leftovers thrown together (tomato and mozzarella salad, cucumber slices) while talking with work friends.
1pm: Get an alert from Chase that D got McDonalds for lunch $15.73
6pm: End up having to stay late because of a delivery no one ever told us about. Wait for insurance to come in, print up paperwork and run out before anything else happens.
7pm: Come home to D in the middle of laundry and heating up leftovers for dinner. After a few bites, my anxiety takes over from needing to go to the store and make a deal with him (i fold his laundry if he comes to the store with me). We pick up K-cups for D, Keurig filter, almond milk, bread, English muffins, Ritz-bits, Nutter-Butters, sour cream, dish soap and cotton rounds. $54.85
9pm: Skincare, read some of my book and sleep before 10.
TOTAL: $70.58
Day 4: 645am: Sleep in a bit, throw up my hair and head to work for another slow day.
2pm: Co-worker treats 4 of us to halal for lunch and we sit together trying to figure out our schedules for what nights coming up work best to go out for drinks. Seems to be tomorrow that works. Pack up and head to a dreaded dentist appointment.
330pm: I usually don't mind this appointment because I take really good care of my teeth, and I love my hygienist. My usual dentist isn't in, so a different one informs me an old filling is cracking and I will need a crown (but from what the X-ray shows, not a root canal and post!). They quote me $1360 for the crown and $500 for a new night guard. Told them I would look into being added to D's dental insurance in addition to the medical I'm now on so that both those expenses would be cut by 85%. Use my CareCredit card to pay my bill for today's 5 X-rays, cleaning and a checkup. $271.
4pm: Get an alert from Chase that D also spent $54 between a doctor copay and a prescription pick up. He also stops at 7-11 for whatever he got there $10.22.
5pm: Change into leggings, tank and sneakers so I'm motivated enough to go on a walk and it's not 900 degrees. D decides to join. We smoke a bowl and enjoy a longer than usual walk around our neighborhood. Our new favorite thing is critiquing houses and landscaping since soon we will have to make the decision to stay another 2 years at our apartment, buy my parents' house or find a new place.
7pm: Change into comfy clothes and settle onto my couch D makes a teriyaki London broil, roasted onions and shisito peppers for dinner. We get into a Hulu and Netflix black hole and impulse watch 2 episodes Married To Millions (jfc, these people are insane but can't look away).
TOTAL: 335.22
Day 5: 630am: Get out of the shower in a panic thinking there's gun shots going off but it's some moron setting off fireworks. In front of my Jeep. Cool. Neighbors start recording him and his white BMW license plate and he eventually drives off cursing at all of them. I need a strong coffee.
730am: Find that the neighbor slipped a Post-It through the mail slot with the police report number she filed in case that guy comes back and it's nice to have if i notice any damage to my Jeep that may have happened.
830am: Friday and it's pay day for both D and I. I transfer $500 into our joint account and feel relief that we're done with bills for the month so it can only go up from here.
10am: If anyone calls me that isn't work related, I panic that someone died or an equally bad situation. D calls to tell me our refrigerator is being replaced since they cannot repair it! All our appliances have been upgraded or replaced since we've moved in, which makes it enticing to sign another lease when we have to in 2022.
4pm: Get an alert from Chase that D took out money to pay for our bi-monthly weed pickup. Our guy gets medical quality from California so it's worth the steeper price. $120
6pm: Out on time and meet my friend/co-worker K at the bar. He has friends there already and it's already getting wild. Work friends and other people I know slowly trickle in and it's a great night. I never understand how people hate their co-workers because I don't know what I would do without them as my genuine friends. Z, K's now fiance, shows up and she wants to talk outside in private where she asks me to be in their wedding party! So honored. They got engaged 2 weeks ago and it's extra special for me because Z's parents and mine have been best friends for 30+ years and I have worked with K for 5 years. We're all very close and he treats me very well in return for how much I help him at work.
9pm: I throw in $40 cash for my one beer, a shared app and a tip.
TOTAL: $160
Day 6: 445am: D wakes up at dawn to go fishing, which he tries to do every off summer day he has. I'm more of a "have a cocktail and read my book on the boat", but today is a get shit done day.
6am: Make my cup of cold brew with a splash of oat milk and start cleaning the entire apartment. Wait until 9am to use the deep cleaning vacuum (we have a smaller Dyson v8 for everyday cleaning and a plug in Bissell Turbo plus for once a week. I just wish I could be more like Monica Geller in a Friends deep cut and have a smaller one to clean both of those.)
11am: Once everything seems in place and spotless, I head out for errands. My mother works at my hometown library and gets me all the new releases. I stop in to pick up my holds for the week and they tell me I won the summer reading challenge (read 32 books) and my prize is a Kindle Fire 7 HD!
12pm: Drive to the most convenient shopping center around. First Ulta for shampoo, conditioner and the Anastasia brow gel. I usually use the Coloupop Boss Brow but decided to try a higher end product that may last longer. I use $6 of Ulta points and $34 of a store credit balance. Just $34 owed. At Target I pick up Pixi Glow toner, quart Ziplocs, Febreeze and an oversized tie-dye crop tee. I get a $5 giftcard to use later because the beauty purchase was more than $25 itself. $53.51. Last stop is Whole Foods to get Oatly, 2 bags of Purely Elizabeth grain-free granola and a LaColombe draft latte. $15.59
2pm: We had made plans to meet up with K and Z for some drinks and food but D is running behind on the boat. 2 hours later we finally get in the car and meet them. Round of beers at the first place and round of drinks at the second, K pays. Stop into a jewelry store in the town where Z buys earrings for herself and snuck in a t-shirt that says "bridesmaid/best friend" for me. I just love her. . 5pm: Realize that it's Derby day and our usual bar is having an event, which thankfully died down by the time we arrive. The Islanders game is also on which annoys the hell out of me. We all order some drinks, wings, nachos and the cook makes us Italian bread zeppoles. I somehow manage to convince K to let me pay for once. Our favorite bartender is 33 so I tip him $33. $66 total
9pm: Get in at a surprisingly reasonable hour and am able to get quality sleep before tomorrow's long day.
TOTAL: $169.10
Day 7:
7am: Sleep in a bit, enjoy my cold brew and get in some time reading Majesty by Katharine McGee (highly recommend the first book American Royals) while the cat has zoomies that won't end.
10am: Feeling restless and decide on a 2 hour walk alone. Listen to the sunday NYT Daily and Smartless (new podcast with Jason Bateman, Will Arnett and Sean Hayes). Back home and get ready for the day.
2pm: Celebrating Labor Day sunday with our quarantine bubble friends and their kids. We're in charge of getting sides and seltzer and I don't disappoint with our selections (the expected mac, coleslaw, potato salads, a cold pasta and veggie salad, tomato, basil, mozz salad, Long Island corn to roast and Blueberry Lemonade Polar seltzer. $34.08. Much to my dismay, D stops at the bevy and gets a 6 pack of Zombie Dust beer $24.32.
7pm: Dinner was incredible bbq food and we end the night with s'mores around the fire pit. Time at our friends' house always feels like a short time at a resort between the chef's kitchen, salt water pool, hot tub and fire pit, I never want to leave. We are also not going to have children so I enjoy the time we get to spend with our friends' kids who are basically family. They send us home with so many leftovers and I graciously accept the fact I won't have to cook anything until Wednesday.
11pm: Stop on the service road for gas $42.50. Get home way too late for a work night, and a sales holiday no less. Get ready for bed and read until I relax enough to fall asleep
TOTAL: 100.90
Weekly Total:$835.80
Week of reflection:
After taking a hard look at everything financially and emotionally in my life, I sat down with D and told him my frustrations over the past few years. I told him I don't want to be anxious every time I get a Chase alert and that he spends without thinking. We agreed that $50 a week will go into his own debit account which he can use for morning coffee, beer, and whatever is his own stuff. His $100 autosave i=for him is switched to every other week for awhile. We will never get to another level relationship-wise or financially if we keep spending more than we earn or don't keep a closer eye on things. I also explained how I am his partner and not a parent and I don't enjoy nagging him about how to adult better. Any other purchase or new expense over $100 we will talk about before doing it.
We will also be designating one or two days a week for errands and expenses with a list in hand so we don't go and buy unnecessary things and stop going to stores so often.

2020.09.14 21:29 The_Alloquist [A Lord of Death] - Postlude & Update

[← Part 60] [Index] [Discord] [Subreddit] [Patreon]
NOTE: Don't forget to use the butler-bot in the comments below this post for regular updates, or, alternatively, come on out to the reddit serials discord and type '?rank A Lord of Death' in #welcome-and-roles
Hello all!
Approximately six months and one hundred and ten thousand words later, A Lord of Death is finished! What started with a fairly innocuous writing prompt (thanks u/GopnikBalls), turned into a longer than average novel in what might very well be a pentology. So congratulations, you managed to get to the end! Or at least, the end of the first draft.
So… what is next?
First off - obviously the rewrite, but I want to address that more in-depth this time, so we’ll loop that around to the end of this postlude.
Second, what is happening with the patreon when there are no more new chapters? Well, first, there’s gonna be a bit of a blank period as I begin to further the rewrite as well as work on a different set of projects. This September is going to be particularly busy as I’m returning to ‘actual’ work, as well as finishing a project that is going to be published as part of the Reddit Serials publishing derby (which I can’t be more specific about, as anonymity is part of the contest).
That withstanding, after today what’s happening with tiers/rewards? Well, first, there’s likely to be a set of teasers for several things that will be released early for all patrons. Secondly, for more higher tier patrons, I’m still working on art and a ALoD side stories. I can confirm at this point that the side-story will be an exploration of one the darker sides of the ALoD universe, so if you’re a horror fan, you might very well enjoy that. I’m also thinking that it will eventually be released to lower tiers as well.
‘What about higher tiers?’ is a thing that probably none of you are thinking. Well, have I got news for you. Currently, there are plans to implement higher tiers, but those are for a new set of content that takes a lot of time and resources to produce.
As a side note, some of you might actually be wondering what I spend money on. Well, the short answer is nothing right now. I’ve never really enjoyed spending money excessively, nor do I have any massive expenses other than the usual life ones. As for more pie in the sky goals? Well, probably a website would be first in order, which would open up a lot of potential doors, such as a virtual storefront and a sense of legitimacy (insert “writer suffers from impostor syndrome” jokes here ). Apart from that and maybe an Adobe subscription, the next goal would be a complete upgrade of my current custom PC (although to do that would require some very generous people and some touches of luck, hence ‘pie in the sky’). An upgraded PC would allow me to create better content far faster than I do now, as well as explore 2D more thoroughly.
Now, those are some of the general ideas for the patreon (which are subject to change). But enough of that, we all know what you all are really here for.
The re-write. Insert dramatic sting here.
Also, spoilers from ALL of ALoD from here on out. You have been warned.
Now, let’s go back to the beginning - for those of you who may have skimmed or missed the last update.
So I have a beta reader (hereafter referred as ‘the beta’ because I think that’s hilarious), who knows everything: who Efrain is, why he is, what the stories behind the heros and their namesakes are, what kind of tea is best served in Hebeen hot and cold, and, of course, where and when ‘some other place, some other time’ is.
And after I finally managed to get them to finish reading the bloody thing, (110k words is a fair amount) the conversation went something like this:
“Hey, I really liked it-”
“Where’s the ‘but’?”
“The ‘but’ is that you’ve characterized maybe two of six characters. From a character perspective, it essentially reads like a verbal sparring between Naia and Efrain.”
“...Shit, you’re right.”
So that was a fun discovery, if ‘fun’ is realizing that your edits just turned into a re-write. Here I thought that it would be ‘in and out, a twenty minute adventure’. Memes aside, I should’ve known better, because one of my more coherent memories of middle school was an author telling me about the eight drafts they had to do before publishing. As we discussed more and more, I realized just how much mess was wrapped around a fundamentally good story.
So, upon review, what went ‘wrong’? Well, with the benefit of hindsight, let’s take a look at the whole series, and why it’s currently fallen short of my expectations:
Problem #1 - Characterization
Let’s address this character by character, starting with Efrain:
Efrain is probably the best established character, which is completely unsurprising given that the first draft is told entirely from his POV. I thought I’d done a fairly good job describing him as an generally annoyed academic that has a heart of gold.
And then I realized there were a lot of issues with the way I did it. First, I attempted to make him confused and disconnected to the wider world, something that really didn’t work with his ravenous hunger for knowledge. I tried to make him connect with the children on an emotional level, which didn’t work, given his aloofness (if taxiderming Sphrent doesn’t show some level of disconnection with humanity, what does?). So here are some of the changes I want to make to Efrain in the rewrite:
  1. Efrain should retain his academic disposition, but I need to elucidate it in other ways than ‘he reads books’. The beta and I agreed that it would be helpful to simply occupy Efrain’s headspace, seeing his thoughts and logical processes more. How he solves a problem is as important as what knowledge he uses.
  2. I want Efrain to be disconnected with the modern world, but not necessarily because he lacks knowledge. Instead, I think that it would be far more in line with his character to lose himself in his research and readings, and fail to realize decades passed.
  3. I don’t think it’s appropriate to connect emotionally to the children at the rate he does. The rate he forges connections with the children is fast to the point of being jarring. I want to spread it out as well as give him additional, less emotional, reasons to pursue a relationship with them.
  4. There are various aspects I need to polish out. Many of his interactions between a variety of cast feel unwarranted and sometimes straight out of characters.
Naia is, by contrast, someone I’m currently quite happy with. He’s clearly an intelligent, ambitious, but quite closely guarded person. There are issues with general story and character continuity that need to be ironed out.
The paladins by contrast, oh, how I set them up for failure. When thinking about the story I was trying to tell, Sphrent became a problem as I effectively set her up as an overzealous punching bag. She was stupid, implusive, ostentatcious, and generally something to be mocked rather than a genuine obstacle to Efrain. Then I almost immediately turn around to say “oh, another overly zealous female paladin, bE ScArED”. The question in hind-sight becomes ‘since I’ve established the paladins as a joke, why should you be frightened of / respect another one’?
Oops. Well, to rectify that mistake, here’s some planned changes:
Sphrent on the whole is made into less of a joke. She’s still obstinate and rather ostentatious, but she doesn’t use ridiculously anachronistic language. She comes off as genuinely confused by Efrain’s presentation rather than just being stupid. I hope that this time, the encounter is an actual threat while still being humorous.
Niche on the whole is a background character / straight man to Lillian zealotry. This would be fine, except…
Lillian, oh Lillian. I’m not joking when I say she’s become one of my favourite characters to write (as well as far more prominent than I expected). Her issue lies exactly in her vocal enthusiasm in respect to the Church of Heart. I’ve given you a humorous character in Sphrent, then turn around and give you another over-exuberant female paladin. Originally, Lillian was planned to have a sisterly or mentor role between her and Sphrent to explain their similar personalities. That is something I might still explore to give Efrain a ‘oh shit’ moment, but I don’t like her as she currently is - her accusatory style as well as her reckless insistence that Efrain is a threat against all evidence rings almost inquisitorial. That’s now not a role I want her to occupy, so I’m considering exchanging those personality traits with Niche, or just muting them far more. She’ll still be wary of Efrain, but I want that to be based more on rational cautiousness rather than complete self-deluded piousness.
Other characters I’m more or less happy with are Raven, the dutchess, Orthelli, and Ryzea. They serve their functions perfectly satisfactorily, so expect only minor tweaks and some expansion as the story gets larger (more on that later).
Innialysia is another character who I’m fine with as she currently is. That being said, she practically disappears during the second and third act. I’m working on ways to give her more personality, screen-time, and a better foundation to work on. I also want to make clear that she’s very much independent of Efrain - an equal and a partner with her own rather than a pet or familiar.
And finally, the children. The fact that I can refer to them as ‘the children’ collectively is emblematic of the problem. The children aren’t characters, they’re receptacles for Efrain’s teaching and/or macguffins that don’t do anything. That, in technical writer’s speak, is what we call a bit of a fuck-up on my part. So, what to do with each?
Leonard is by far the simplest to deal with, because his character doesn’t become particularly relevant until later books, so I can keep him more-or-less the same. In fact, I might have to pull out Allo’s first rule of writing, (i.e. ‘is it necessary?’) and remove him from the book entirely, to only be mentioned for later appearances.
The twins are very much blank slates, and also oddly comfortable compared to Aya. That’s going to change - they need to suffer for the sake of consistancy. In all seriousness, they experience far less of a burden than their compatriot, and thus are going to be very differently treated. As an important side note, I can now confirm that there are going to be multiple POVs in the rewrite, including Aya, Sorore, and Innie.
Aya’s only character notable trait isn’t actually a trait at all, but trauma. That is also going to change - I want their trauma to have actual impact. I want to explore other things that help define and flesh out her character. In character she’ll be very similar, but you will see parts of her life before she becomes a hero of the church, and reckon with the very real impacts of her ‘blessing’.
In general, I am also going to adjust the arcs so that the children are less trusting of Efrain. It’s a bit strange the people either thrust into the chaos of heroship (Aya) or raised by an anti-magic church (the twins), are so trusting of a mage coming out of nowhere.
Of course, I’m glossing over a lot of details, tweaks, and adjustments that are going into this. One reason is to keep the length of this post to a minimum, another is that I don’t want to spoil too much, and the third is that some are related to things that happen in later books, including the very end of the series which I definitely don’t want to spoil (you can practically feel the grin as I’m writing, can’t you).
Problem #2 - Narrative: Continuity, Worldbuilding, and Pacing
Another thing that was impressed on me was the writing style only started to really solidify in the final third of the story. Stylistically, I agree on that point, but I was already going to update the earlier portions to be in line with the rest of it, so there’s not much to talk about there (actually there’s a lot, but that’s a complicated enough topic that it would need its own post).
So, the fastest thing to cover - world-building. Let’s see what a reader had to think about it:
“Their world building seems sparse as of chapter 43. Not much is told about the world other than the places the characters directly find themselves in. For example there's not much in the nation they find themselves in. The focus is left out on the local culture and the lack of descriptions about the world around them leaves the story feeling a bit bland to read at times.”
And I don’t disagree. I allude to a lot of different places: Hebeen and Nieth, Angorrah, Pasgrima, Karkos, and a whole host of other places, but I don’t explore them any more than that. The principal reason for that was I was setting up to expand more in future books, and now that I look back on it it’s probably best for me to drop more explicit world building where I can.
I want to talk about the cultural practices of these places, their political structures, their trade relations, religious differences. Expect more references and impact on the story as I introduce more characters from these respective regions. There might not be an in-depth exploration of each place, but there’s gonna be more of everything.
Second, the issue of pacing and continuity, which can be summed in another conversation I had with the beta.
TB: “So, basically, when I’m thinking of the arcs - the pacing is all over the pace. Sometimes you have conversations that stretch over half a chapter or more. Then you just skip a day or two of traveling. Overall, it simply feels like you’re speeding up all the boring parts while expanding all the interesting parts, which brings up the question - why even have ‘boring parts’?”
Allo: “So what you’re saying is I’m trying to write a book in the style of A Game of Thrones with a third of the words.”
TB: “Pretty much, yes.”
Which, you know, fair enough.
A Lord of Death was not planned to be a fantasy epic, rather a self-contained story about a necromancer committing identity theft after one too many adventurers blew up his home. Several chapters in, I realized just how much I liked it, invented a whole world around it and we were off to the races, and it shows it in more ways than one.
So, how does that translate to the rewrite? Well, most of the changes are focused on lengthening out the story, delving more into the individual character’s experiences and slowing down or evening out the pace. Battles should be bright spots of intensity to contrast character drama, exposition should build up to dramatic action, rather than simply existing between them.
I’ve also invested considerable amounts of time and effort to maintain character and story continuity. Often, a character considers all the options they can think of before choosing an unpalatable one. When choosing one that is difficult or seemingly out of character, they try to justify it either to themselves or others. On a micro-scale, I think I’ve done a fair job ensuring that everything works along character lines. On a macro-scale, many of the decisions need to be fleshed-out, reviewed, tweaked and otherwise changed to align more with my current understanding of these characters and their perspectives.
A similar set of principles applies to Chekov’s guns, macguffins, and the like. I try not to actively include them unless I have a specific purpose for them (although not always successfully -looking at you Naidacan). Abilities and magic are kept fairly consistent, within a loose but somewhat capped range of expectation (as partially addressed in my post explaining why Efrian is ‘weak’).
To go into all the specific changes would take all day, but let’s just say that there will be significant new additions (probably doubling the length of the story, if not more), as well as a lot of changes to the way the story runs. To give you an idea, the graveyard scene currently occurs around chapter four, but in the rewrite it might be in chapter ten or possibly even later. There’s a lot of new and exciting stuff that I can’t wait to share with all of you.
A Collection of Smaller Issues
There’s some issues that I consider smaller / easier / simpler to clean up that don’t necessarily merit in-depth explanations or are addressed under the umbrella of the two topics above.
Issue #1 - Representation of Women
Let’s be honest, I knock around a lot of my characters pretty hard, no matter what their gender identity. However, as my rule goes:
“If I’m not looking for it and I still notice it, you may have a problem.”
And I’ve noticed it, so hopefully that will be re-addressed as I change the characters and the story as a whole.
Issue #2 - Certain...Details
Now, unfortunately, I can’t really be specific about a lot of this, as it involves context that belongs to the series as a whole. Some things will have to be changed, toned down, or emphasized to create the effect I want.
Issue #3 - Grammar and Spelling
Should be pretty obvious, but I’m trying to clean it up, so that will hopefully involve polishing the mechanics of my writing.
So, that’s more or less it! If you’ve got thoughts, comments or reviews to leave, I’ll be happy to read them either in the comments, in DMs or on my discord. It always helps to have feedback to work with, on whatever, the more thorough the better. Thanks for sticking through over a hundred thousand words, here’s to all the fun and fascinating adventures to come! More to come soon.
Till the next time,
The Alloquist
P.S. I was going back and cleaning up the index, and I found something strange in part one on reddit serials. It looked rather like this:
Ŵ̒͝e̛̋́
Unfortunately, I’ve got a lot of work to do today, so I can’t check any other parts to see if something similar has happened. If someone could check it out, maybe leave in the comments below if it turns out to be something more than random interference.
Happy hunting!

2020.09.14 01:07 NightBrewess 5 year exhausted Butch trans woman vent

So idk what I expect from this post other than I just need to put it out somewhere before it eats away at me completely.
As the title suggests I'm just so fucking exhausted. I've been out for 5 years now (4.5 HRT) and while I could very easily pass if I put a bunch of effort in I don't want to. Meaning I don't like skirts and cardigans or makeup, not to mention how fucking over the top I have to play my mannerisms and voice just to be seen as female by strangers. My voice is extremely feminine compared to the booming bass I was in my high school choir but just the way I talk, walk, and act in general codes me as male.
I have a supportive network, a loving partner, and even play as apart of a women's sport (roller derby). But idk what it is that bothers me. Part of it is me coming on here for the first time in years and seeing everyones transition and hearing stories that sound so similar to those first couple of years we experience in transition that are so exhilarating that make me envious af.
One major thing I can directly pinpoint is that even when I do feel like presenting feminine out in public I always deal with shitty men who catcall me only to show up extreme disgust when they find out I'm trans through my voice. Like I'm tryna tell them to fuck off but they just retract their words and get aggressive. The only option to avoid this is to raise the pitch of my voice to an incredible degree and hope they don't fucking clock me but fuck that they were the ones staring at my ass in the first place.
While we're speaking of men, I consider myself almost 100% lesbian unfortunately much to my chagrin I am bi and still do have attraction to men. Going back to that Envy, hearing my partner talk about her slut phase (she's cis) and just being able to sleep with men without it being a fucking big deal. Something I feel like I can or never could have had. All my experience with men hitting on me in the past has been creepy and weird at best and downright scary at worst due to my trans status.
Bottom dysphoria almost completely fucks my sexuality as well I'm more than capable of getting any partner I'm with off but when it comes to me I just feel so disconnected from my body to dysphoria despite their very kind efforts to do something for me sexually.
Finally the cherry on top to wrap this all up, is I truly feel like this fucking unicorn in the MTF community. I workout and am p muscular boasting the ability to out lift many men I've met when it comes to squats and other lower body exercises. But I've never once met another trans woman who is comfortable enough to weight lift because "fear of looking too masculine" am I the only one who is trying to fight against this weak woman archetype. Like I know strength can encompass so many facets of one's life not just limited to physical strength. But when I talk to trans women they always admire my athletic body but always follow up with "I could never make my body look like that, I don't have the confidence you do" and just resign themselves to being soft doughy e-girls. (Don't get me wrong I love my soft doughy trans e girls, I just wish there were more athletic tomboys).
Tldr: I just feel like I'm out here tryna do so much for visibility because I break so many of the "stereotypes of what it means to be a trans woman" and I'm just exhausted of seemingly being the only one. As for "queer spaces" where I may fit in more I don't feel v welcome because ethey seem so tightly policed (no fault of their own I know they try to create as safe a space as possible)

2020.09.03 03:05 corysboredagain What Season 2 Could Have Been....

According to me, of course!
I'm a long time Gilmore fan and new bunhead fan. I watched Bunheads twice already in the last week. Safe to say it's an obsession! Here are my thoughts on what a season 2 might have looked like:

- Melanie pursues roller derby but struggles to balance her love for dance with derby. Has a falling out with Fanny when Fanny discovers she's joined roller derby. Fanny demands she quits derby, but she refuses. Mel also has a fight with her parents about her grades and her lack of desire to go to college and gets grounded. At the season finale, there is a big audition for a credited dance roll in LA but she sneaks out and sprains her ankle right before "the big audition" at roller derby and gets cut from the auditions because she can't dance.
- Ginny and Frankie have an on-again off-again/will they won't they relationship. She gets the role in the play, but Cozette is her understudy/other important part and they compete for Mel's friendship. Ginny finds herself more drawn to theatre than to ballet, and drops out of "the big audition" willingly, in solidarity with Mel. The season ends with her signing up for vocal performance lessons that conflict with her Ballet regime at the encouragement of Michelle. While Fanny is angry to potentially loose one of her best dancers, Michelle really believes Ginny is a rare talent, and continues to mentor her privately against Fanny's wishes.
- Boo has a love triangle with Carl and her Coworker (Harvard boy, Jeff?). At first, she doesn't realize she's interested in Harvard boy, but they get to know each other better at work and their both ambitious and Boo relates to his big dreams because she too has a goal of becoming a professional dancer, though she doesn't fit the stereotype. At the end of the season after a conversation with Fanny about her attitude and seriousness about ballet, she breaks up with Carl but does not date Jeff, deciding if she is "really gonna do this professional dancer thing" she can't let herself get distracted by boys. Boo auditions for the credited role but does not get it. The blow is softened when she is finally accepted to the Joffrey summer program, reaffirming her choice to stay focused on ballet.
- Sasha continues with ballet, having already had her fling with cheerleading and decides to get serious. This makes things difficult between her and Roman because he wants to focus on their relationship and doesn't relate to Sasha's love for ballet because he found basketball oppressive. Like Boo, Sasha has dreams of becoming a professional dancer. Roman also stops wearing eyeliner. Sasha finds herself getting offers from prestigious arts programs and universities, but she feels unsatisfied and betrayed by her parents because she has no one to share her successes with. Michelle convinces her that she is too good to give up on herself, even if other people have given up on her. Sasha auditions for the big audition and the Joffrey and get both opportunities and has to choose between the two, putting a strain on her relationship with Roman.
- In the Meantime, Fanny and Michelle get their outdoor amphitheater open with help from Milly. When a huge snafu happens with the professional dance costumes at the last minute, Truly swoops in and creates beautiful costumes at the last minute, saving the grand opening performance. Michelle opens up to Fanny about her failed LA audition, and while Fanny is upset that Michelle wasn't honest with her she encourages Michelle to pursue serious dance if that's really where her heart is at, understanding she might lose her studio partner for good.

Champions League attempt no. 2! Newcastle United 2024/25 [REALISTIC CAREER]

Season 6 Recap

Coming off a disappointing maiden Champions League run, Radomir Krastev reloaded for a run at another top 4 finish.
We have since had our most successful season yet, winning both the Carabao Cup and the Europa League!
Quarter-Finals
Semi-Finals
The two teams to play in the Europa League Final
Final
First European Success!
We also had an excellent domestic campaign, finishing 2nd in the Premier League, behind our newest rivals Tottenham Hotspur, who beat us for 6th last season and denied a historic treble for us this year.
Who do we think of Tottenham? Shit. What do we think of shit? Tottenham!
Once again we crashed out in the Round 4 replay in the FA Cup, meaning we have never reached the 5th round of England's oldest domestic cup.
2nd and the best defense in the league!

Season 7

The plan for season 7 is simple. Stay in the top 4. We played 70 games last season, so the squad is capable of at least one deep cup run whilst challenging in the league. I would like this cup run to be the FA Cup to shake the 4th round replay curse.
2023/24 season summary. Personally, I'd have given myself the manager of the year award with that resume.
Here is the squad for the season.

First XI & First Choice Bench

First Choice XI going into 2024/25
The first choice bench options for 2024/25

GK

GKs
  1. Koen Casteels, 85OVR. A tall, commanding presence in the box. A good leader who could have been a good captain had he been here earlier in his career.
  2. Harrison Mason, 75OVR. Youth Academy prospect who is being groomed to take over from Casteels in the next 2 years. Will play all domestic cup games and a few PL games this year

RB

RBs
  1. Jayden Bogle, 82OVR. Arrives from Derby County as a replacement for Denzel Dumfries who joins OL. A good, young, homegrown, talent who can look to take over the position for the next 5 years.
  2. Bwomono, 74OVR. An amazing backup that plays above his rating. Absolutely rapid.
  3. Ethan Bell, 68OVR. Youth prospect.
  4. Phillips, 62OVR. Youth prospect.

CB

CBs
  1. Nico Elvedi, 85OVR. Enters 2nd year at the club after an incredible VVD-esque effect last year. Surprisingly no bids this summer from the best of Europe, but you won't catch me complaining.
  2. Jamaal Lascelles, 82OVR. Club Captain and cult hero.
  3. Vandenbussche, 80OVR. The first choice next year if all goes to plan.
  4. Maxi Wober, 81OVR. Amazing rotation option that a top club needs. Arrives this year to replace Lukas Muhl, who wanted increased game time.
  5. Rafael Mura, 77OVR. Free agent, good backup.
  6. Antonatos, 63OVR. Youth prospect

LB

LBs
  1. Koyalipou, 82OVR. Takes over the starting role. Promising Wing Back, provides more attacking nous than Lloyd Kelly, at the loss of some defensive stability and physical gifts.
  2. Lloyd Kelly, 84OVR. Ol' Lloyd is off to sunny Barcelona! We wish him the best with his January move, he will take up the mantle of rotation and will hopefully provide stability and leadership in the second unit until he leaves. Not prepared to give him vital first-team minutes with an excellent young LB like Koyalipou waiting in the wings.
  3. Ondrej Pokorny, 72OVR, Youth prospect, attracting attention from Europe's elite but enjoys the opportunities he is afforded under Krastev. Would consider an offer from a smaller European club with the chance to play first-team football in the coming years.
  4. Mohammed El Bassir, 66OVR. Youth Prospect

RCM

RCMs
  1. Nahitan Nandez, 84OVR. Just really good. Would be allowed to leave if the right bid came in.
  2. Youssouf, 81OVR. Great rotation option all over the pitch.
  3. Soriano Casas, 78OVR. Rotation option that may kick up a fuss for minutes soon.

LCM

LCMs
  1. Abdoulaye Doucoure, 84 OVR. Club Vice-Captain. Aging but fully capable for at least one more season, if not two.
  2. Callum Thomas, 77OVR. Being groomed to take over the role. Slightly different skill set so may need a more physical midfield partner than Nandez.
  3. Dru Yearwood, 78OVR. Supersub midfielder, my dark horse favorite player.
  4. Harris, 61OVR. Youth prospect.

CAM

CAMs
  1. James Maddison, 86OVR. Last year's player of the season.
  2. Marvin Mulder, 76OVR. Capable of playing anywhere in midfield. Being groomed for the first team along with Thomas, Hill, and Mason. a very exciting group of talents.
  3. Augusto Donatti, 76OVR. Good rotation CAM.

RW

RWs
  1. Moussa Djenepo, 84OVR. Growth has slowed but an excellent consistent winger who shows up in big games.
  2. Lewis Hill, 77OVR. Another of the prospective future first-teamers. Can also play as a striker and has an eye for goal from the right-wing.
  3. Youssouf, 81OVR. Can literally play anywhere and might need to with the depth in this position!

LW

LWs
  1. Diego Rossi, 82OVR. Plays well above his rating, first choice LW.
  2. Francisco Trincao, 83OVR. Not quite the Barca wunderkid of real-life; Signed from Sheffield Wednesday of the Championship. Brought in for reasons that will become clear shortly.
  3. Richardson, 73OVR. Another potential first-teamer, not quite at the level of the others.

ST

STs
  1. Ganago, 80OVR. WHERE IS CHE ADAMS? Che Adams refuses to sign a contract under £100kpw. That is madness and he won't play again until these demands are slashed to nearer £50k. ganago is a good option but we entered the season believing he'd be backup. It's on him to prove if he can lead a line in the PL and Champions League.
  2. Diego Rossi, 82OVR. Can play here but not preferred as I like him at LW. This is the reason Trincao is at the club.
  3. Che Adams, 82OVR. I would play him in an emergency, but I'd rather not.
  4. King, 65OVR. Clunky af, but physically gifted Youth Prospect.
  5. Moretti, 60OVR. Youth Prospect who scored a hat trick in his Carabao Cup debut.

The Transfer deals

Only the 3 players join this summer in our quietest window yet. We removed a few players who weren't seeing much game time. We lost Denzel Dumfries to Olympic Lyonnais but were able to replace him with the long scouted Jayden Bogle from Derby County. Che Adams is in the midst of a contract dispute so won't be seeing much game time, Francisco Trincao from Sheffield Wednesday is the man brought in as insurance, with a bit of reshuffling to put Rossi in at striker. Rafael Mura joins as a free agent, signing with Newcastle after letting his contract expire for a lower league Argentinian side who were unable to meet his ambitions.
We went after Jota once more but he is still demanding too much money.
All in all a quiet window, raiding the championship for our new talent. However, some potential big moves coming next year. Lascelles and Doucoure are both aging as Captain and Vice-Captain respectively and replacements are being actively monitored for next summer and onwards.

The Future.

I'm thinking of putting up a poll soon with potential transfer targets. Would people like this as its own post or as part of a season update in general?
Where do you expect me to finish this season? Is 2nd re-achievable with this squad or will we regress again like our last Champions League season?
Feedback is always appreciated, let me know what you think!

2020.08.25 18:29 omnomnomdeplume94 Help with parking permits

Hello all ☺️. My partner and I are moving into our first flat soon and need to apply for parking permits for both our cars. We’ve checked the council website and the wee interactive map and it looks like we’re in the Sandyford zone, but we were up today and noticed on the signs for the meters right outside the doors to the close that only people with permits for the Park zone can park there without worrying about parking charges (the flat is on the corner of Argyle street and Derby Street).
We’ve tried phoning the council but can’t get through to an actual person and we have sent an email but it seems there’s a bit of a backlog with emails so was wondering if anyone’s been in this situation before where it’s not been really clear which permit zone you should apply for? Just seems a bit silly that we’d have to apply for a parking permit for a different area and wouldn’t be able to park our cars right outside our own front door.

[OC] Watford's 2014-15 Promotion Winning Campaign - Where Are They Now?

With the final Premier League matchday sealing Watford's return back to the second tier, I thought it would be interesting to have a look at the team that finished 2nd in the Championship some 5 years ago.

https://preview.redd.it/aja30anzmri51.png?width=1205&format=png&auto=webp&s=a5b1e269ee0beecc9376b4b6bbbb0b37a343341f

Manager: Slaviša Jokanović

On the 7th of October 2014 Slaviša Jokanović took the helm, becoming the club’s 4th manager in only five weeks since the season had begun. The Serbian’s tenure saw the hornet’s win a league high 27 matches and record numerous impressive attacking displays, including a 7-2 win at Blackpool, as the club ultimately finished second - a single point behind eventual champions Bournemouth, after conceding an injury time equalizer on the final day. Despite challenging for the title and returning the club back to the topflight, Jokanović was unable to agree new terms with the side and subsequently left come seasons end.
He has since returned to the Championship, via a brief 6-month stint with Israeli club Maccabi Tel-Aviv, introducing his signature fast-paced, silky brand of attacking football to an underachieving Fulham side. Initially brought in to save the London-based team from relegation during the 15-16 season, he later led a promotion push which culminated in victory against Aston Villa in the Playoff Final returning the club to the top-flight. However, with the cottagers unable to adapt to life in the Prem, Jokanović found himself out of favour and out of the job by mid-November with his team at the foot of the table picking up just 5 points from 12 games. As of June 2019, Jokanović has been managing 7-time Qatari champions Al-Gharafi SC enjoying moderate success in the gulf state.

Starting XI:

GK: Heurelho Gomes (39)

A goalkeeper that frequently divides opinion, Brazilian Heurelho Gomes signed for Watford in the summer of 2014 following his release from Spurs. Initially penning a year-long deal, it was soon extended by a further 3 following an impressive campaign which saw Gomes keep 15 clean sheets (from a total of 44 league games) as the club sealed it’s return to top-flight football.
An undeniably talented shot stopper hampered by his tendency to make the odd high-profile mistake, Gomes remained the Hornet’s number one for a further 2 seasons before the arrival of Greek international Orestis Karnezis and the acquisition of Ben foster from West Brom a year later pushed Gomes toward the side-lines. Following the club’s recent relegation from the Premier League, the Brazilian announced he would be leaving the side having made 160 appearances across 6 years. He currently finds himself a free agent.

RB: Juan Carlos Paredes (33)

The Ecuadorian right back, renowned for both his speed and technique, was to be Watford’s 20th summer signing in 2014 after joining the club from Spanish side Granada. Paredes, who was equally adept playing further up the pitch, soon became a mainstay in the Hornet’s backline going on to contribute 4 assists in 39 league games as Watford challenged for the title.
That 2014-15 season would soon prove to be the last where he had significant impact however as the change in management, newfound competition and the step up in quality would begin to halt his career at the club. After making just 21 appearances in the 2 years after his debut season, Paredes returned to his homeland turning out for Ecuadorian outfits, Emelec and most recently CD El nacional

CB: Craig Cathcart (31)

A product of the Manchester United youth academy, Northern Irishman Cathcart first played for Watford during the 2009-10 season where he found himself on loan at the club from Old Trafford. He would later return to Vicarage Road, via a 4-year spell at Blackpool, in the summer of 2014 endearing himself to the fans by scoring an equaliser on his debut for the club. The acquisition would prove a shrewd piece of business by the Hertfordshire side as Cathcart helped shore up the defence on route to a second-place finish in the League.
One of only two players in the 2014-15 squad that remain at the club to this day, Cathcart has been a loyal servant to the side racking up 176 appearances across 6 years for Watford. The Northern Irishman is also approaching a half century of caps for the national side for whom he made his debut a decade ago - not bad for a free signing.

CB: Gabrielle Angella (31)

Having signed permanently for Watford from Italian club Udinese the summer of the 2013-14 season, Angella had already established himself within the starting line-up when the 2014-15 season eventually began. Partnering either Craig Cathcart or swede Joel Ekstrand in the centre of defence, Angella proved an important figure at Vicarage Road making 35 appearances as part of a unit that conceded the fourth least goals in the championship that season.
A tall and physically imposing centre-back capable of scoring the odd goal, Angella eventually fell out of favour for the club signing for QPR on loan at the beginning of the 15-16 season. Upon returning from loan Angella re-joined his former club Udinese and 3 years later signed a contract for Serie B side Perugia where he currently remains.

LB: Daniel Pudil (34)

Czech national Daniel Pudil cut a reliable figure during his time at Vicarage Road. Often deployed on the left side of defence but occasionally playing further up the pitch, Pudil would end his Watford career at the end of the 2014-15 season after making 23 appearances that term.
A useful squad player for the Hornet’s, Pudil racked up over 100 games for the club during a 3-year stint before moving to Sheffield Wednesday on loan at the beginning of the 15-16 season. Having impressed up north he signed permanently for the side and went on to play 114 times in 3 years before returning to the Czech Republic with first division side FK Mladá Boleslav for the 19/20 season.

CM: Dániel Tőzsér (35)

A set piece specialist capable of weaving moments of brilliance within matches; fan favourite Dániel Tőzsér was an integral, and somewhat underappreciated, player during his time in Hertfordshire. Initially signed on a loan deal from Italian club Parma in the summer of 2014, Tőzsér provided 10 goal contributions in 45 appearances helping the Hornet’s secure promotion in what would ultimately be his last season for the club.
Upon returning from his loan in the summer of 2015, the Hungarian followed former team-mate Gabrielle Angella to a QPR side battling to escape the Championship. Having made only 16 league appearances in a solitary season at Loftus Road, Tőzsér returned to his homeland with Hungarian side Debrecen for whom he has appeared 118 times during a 4-year stay. Following the club’s recent relegation to the Hungarian Second-tier in the 2019-20 season, Tőzsér announced his decision to hang up his boots - calling time on his professional career.

CM: Almen Abdi (33)

An intelligent playmaker with an eye for a goal, albeit hampered by his injury problems, Abdi largely impressed during his 3 seasons at Vicarage Road. Proving an important source of both goals (9) and assists (2) during the 2014-15 season, the Swiss midfielder proceeded to play for the club 32 times that term as Jokanović’s men battled at the top of the table.
Whilst Abdi represented the side for their first season back in the topflight, going on to make 32 league appearances, new club signings and the increased demands of the Premier League ultimately signalled an end to his Hornet’s career. Offered a contract by Championship side Sheffield Wednesday for the 16-17 season, the playmaker went on to make 20 appearances for the club before being released 2 years later. Abdi currently finds himself a free agent, although his top-level experience and creative spark may prove an alluring prospect for a smaller team.

RW: Matěj Vydra (28)

Having first played for Watford during the 2012-13 season (On loan from parent club Udinese) where he had notched up a total of 20 league goals and earned the Championship player of the year award, it’s fair to say big things were expected when he returned to the club 2 years later. Fresh off a stint in the Premier League with West Brom, Vydra lived up to the expectations scoring 16 and laying on a further 6 assists as Watford were promoted.
Although Vydra was signed permanently by the club that summer, the Czech international would only go on to play once more for the Hornet’s before he was loaned to Reading for the remainder of the season. Though failing to find his feet in Berkshire, a transfer to Derby County saw Vydra’s form resurrected as he received numerous personal accolades for a campaign which saw him net 21 league goals. As a result of his rediscovered form Vydra was rewarded with a move to Premier League side Burnley where he currently remains, adding attacking quality to Sean Dyche’s team.

LW: Ikechi Anya (32)

A diminutive, quick and versatile winger, Anya was a useful squad player during his time at the club. Whilst not particularly prolific, Anya did provide a burst of energy and pace on the wings, helping to supply Deeney and Ighalo upfront and went on to create a respectable 7 assists in 35 appearances throughout the 2014-15 season.
Featuring 28 times the following term, Anya was eventually sold to Derby county in the summer of 2016 where he has since gone on to play 38 times for the Rams before being released at the end of the 19-20 season. Like former teammates Almen Abdi and Heurelho Gomes, Glaswegian-born Anya currently finds himself without a club.

ST: Odion Ighalo (31)

A talismanic figure during his time at Vicarage Road, Nigerian centre forward Odion Ighalo first signed for the club in the summer of 2014-15. Whilst originally penning a year-long loan deal from parent club Udinese, the deal was soon made permanent after a string of impressive performances brought forward the signing. A Strong, powerful and physically imposing striker, Ighalo proved a revelation upfront for the 2014-15 season, forming a fruitful partnership with fellow striker Troy Deeney, as he finished on 20 league goals for the season.
Upon return to the top-flight Ighalo’s impressive goal-scoring record followed, netting 16 strikes as Watford comfortably avoided relegation. However, the next season proved less prolific for Igahlo as the striker’s figures began to decline managing only a single goal during 18 Premier League outings. That Winter, Ighalo was sold to then Chinese Super League club Changchun Yatai for what was believed to be around £20 million - a club record sale at the time. Scoring for fun out in China, Ighalo still managed a second-place finish in the scoring charts (during his second season) despite his club’s relegation to the second tier. He later moved to fellow Chinese side Shanghai Greenland Shenhua making only a handful of appearances before Manchester United signed him on loan mid-way through the 19-20 season. He has since remained at United making an impact whenever called upon from the bench.

ST: Troy Deeney (32)

Commanding a £500,000 transfer fee from then club Walsall 10 years ago, Birmingham-born Deeney has gone on to become one of the best purchases the club have ever made. Although making a slow start to his Watford career, managing only 22 goal contributions in 79 games for the club, his form soon began to pick up. Scoring 19 league goals during the 12-13 season as well as capping off one of the most infamous counterattacks of all-time against Leicester in the Playoff Semi-Finals, Deeney continued to go from strength to strength in Hertfordshire. Scoring 24 goals the season after and a further 21 during the 2014-15 season as Watford were promoted to the Premier League.
Never one to shy away from controversy, forward Deeney has overcome a prison sentence, abusive father, and a school expulsion; prevailing against his chequered past to lead the club into the Premier League. Ever present during the Hornet’s 5 year stay in the top-flight, Deeney managed 47 Premier League goals in 163 total outings for the club. Whilst ultimately his 10 league goals this term couldn’t keep his team up, many Watford fans will hope that he remains at the club as they seek an immediate return to the top-flight. Along with fellow teammate Craig Cathcart Deeney is only the second member of the 2014-15 promotion winning squad that is still with the club today, in the process cementing his place as a Watford legend.

2020.08.22 02:58 sempleat Barcelona’s past 30 years and parallels to today

I made a comment about Barcelona’s past and how it parallels to the current situation in a post about Messi and someone suggested it could be a post of its own.
It’s important to put the present of a club into some sort of context: history tells us why things happen the way they do. There's more information up to 2012 because I think people already know a lot about it since then.
Honestly, if I was a Barca fan I would have hope - you just can’t be on top forever (not saying it’s acceptable to be so bad), all teams go through cycles of good and bad, ups and downs. Their time will come again and as discussed below and judged by history, it will always come with endless crisis and drama with patches of incredible triumph. There will be another era, and another end to that era too.
Remember what Pep said in 2012:
Asked what he would say to the young Barcelona fan crying for the first time last night [after exiting the Champions League], Guardiola replied: "Welcome to the club – there will be many more times, too."
Origins: Nunez and Cruyff
In 1988, Josep Lluis Nunez had been president of Barcelona for ten years - a conservative and stingy man. That year, the ‘Hesperia Mutiny’ occurred: the entire Barca squad called a press conference at which they demanded the resignation of the board, as a result of Nunez’s refusal to pay competitive wages, amongst other, dodgier business practices. Nunez reacted by sacking almost the entire squad, and the manager for good measure.
Nunez’s next move was the appointment of Johan Cruyff. Cruyff, who had cemented his status as a hero among fans with his stint as a player there in the 70s, was a huge success. He changed the entire culture of the club and constructed the foundation on which Barca’s recent successes were built. His team won 4 straight La Liga titles as well as Barca’s first European Cup. They were so good that they were known as the Dream Team.
However, Cruyff also had a massive ego and needed to get his way, which was a recipe for disaster in his relationship with Nunez.
In his heyday Cruyff was far too popular to sack. Nunez knew, though, that all he had to do was bide his time. The Dream Team came to a dismal end in 1994, after they lost the Champions League final that year, which they had been heavily favoured to win, 4-0.
Cruyff responded by dismantling the team and starting over, bringing in more young talent from the academy and foreign stars like Luis Figo, a serious young Portuguese player. The experiment didn’t quite work out, and results continued to slip. Cruyff was the kind of man who didn’t suffer fools at all, and he treated the salivating press pack that covered Spanish football with undisguised contempt when he felt they deserved it. They now felt free to give him some back.
Cruyff and Nunez’s disagreements became increasingly public, and in 1996 finally culminated in his acrimonious departure, which is reported to have included a rant in vice-president and super fan Joan Gaspart’s office in which Cruyff smashed a chair.
Pep, quédate: Guardiola
Cruyff had picked Pep Guardiola out of Barca’s youth team to become the on-field leader of the Dream Team. Cultured, charismatic, a natural leader and a fiercely committed Catalan nationalist, he very quickly attained cult hero status.
The politics of Barcelona and Spanish football in general meant that he also made powerful enemies, both inside and outside the club. Many associated with the conservative club hierarchy did not like how outspoken he was. Increasingly, they worried about the soft power he wielded, fearing he would turn it against them if he perceived them to be acting against the interests of the club.
An example of the difficulty Guardiola posed Nunez: at the end of 96/97, Nunez was being typically ham-fisted about extending Guardiola’s contract, which was due to expire, and Pep was prepared to pack up and leave at the end of the season.
At the big ceremony held at City Hall to celebrate Barca winning the Spanish Cup, star player Luis Figo led the fans in a chant of Nosotros te queremos, Pep, quédate, quédate, quédate (“we love you, Pep, stay”). Rather ironically.
With the threat of an upcoming re-election campaign looming over him, Nunez could hardly afford to lose such a popular player. He backed down and Guardiola signed an extension.
In a way, those in charge at Barca were right to worry. Guardiola was unusually powerful for a player, and he never kept quiet when something struck him as wrong, even if it meant criticising those running the club. So it was almost inevitable that the whispering campaign against him began almost immediately as he came to prominence.
Vice-captain and club hero Luis Figo’s contract was up for renewal at the end of 99/00. Negotiations had stalled over the board’s usual penny-pinching ways. Meanwhile, Real Madrid presidential candidate Florentino Perez was campaigning on the daring but surely impossible promise of bringing Figo to Madrid.
In early July, Figo was still insisting that he would remain at Barca in an interview with local media.
But the pre-contract that was said not to exist did, in fact, exist. Perez won, Madrid paid Figo’s buy-out clause, and pig heads flew.
Decline: Gaspart
Figo’s departure led to a period of madness: at board level, as new president Gaspart spent money like a madman to try and make up for the loss of Figo, bringing in ever more hideously over-priced, sub-standard players on huge wages; and throughout the fanbase, as the fortunes of the team took a nose dive.
“It's a sign of the times at the Camp Nou that Serra Ferrer could declare his satisfaction at a "hard fought victory" and claim that with two wins on the trot, Barcelona are starting to get things right. And against those giants of world football Club Brugge and Osasuna, too.”
Nov 2000 - Sid Lowe
The new manager, Llorenc Serra Ferrer, had no power, leaving control of team affairs largely in the hands of four Spanish veterans, led by the hugely influential but increasingly burnt out club captain Guardiola.
Guardiola was nearing the end of his endurance. As El Pais commented in the late 90s, Barca could not simply continue to use him as a symbol in the morning and a scapegoat in the afternoon. The departure of his good friend Figo (the godfather of his first child) and a string of other fellow homegrown players and veterans saddened him, and he grew increasingly isolated in his struggle to assert the voice and image of Barca that he believed in. The environment grew ever more toxic.
In 2001, Guardiola chose to leave Barca at the end of his contract. Many believed he was jumping before he could be pushed.
The departures of heavyweights such as Figo and Guardiola and chaos at boardroom level had led to a team who were often unmotivated, disorganised, and who no one any good really wanted to join. Fans described the team as 'Puyol and ten other blokes’, future captain Carles Puyol being the lone voice in the desert fighting against apathy and incompetence.
“Barça don't have a discernible first eleven, Luis Enrique is out injured, most of the fans never wanted Louis Van Gaal back in the first place, and the club is wracked by internal divisions, hidden agendas and economic difficulties which the president Joan Gaspart only seems to be making worse.
The knives are out for Gaspart. His three-year presidency has reaped three managers, endless crises and no trophies - not even the Copa de Catalunya. And what little credit he had left was definitively lost with his ridiculous response to last week's derbi events [Figo and the pig’s head]; a response that even drew criticism from the vice-president of the government, Mariano Rajoy.”
Dec 2002 - Sid Lowe

“Van Gaal is gone but FC Barcelona are still a complete shambles. Not surprising really: what they really need is a change of president. Anyone really, just not Joan Gaspart - the man with a supporter's club named in his honour.
A Real Madrid one.”
Feb 2003 - Sid Lowe

“On Saturday night FC Barcelona were beaten 2-1 by hated rivals Real Madrid. It was their first league defeat in a Camp Nou derbi for twenty years… Madrid have broken a twenty year run which was, quite honestly, about the only thing Barça fans could still cling to.”
Nov 2003 - Sid Lowe
Revival: Laporta and Rosell
The presidential elections in 2003 brought about a revolution: Elefant Blau, the protest group which had tried to unseat Nunez and his ilk unsuccessfully in the past, won. Their leader Joan Laporta (a Cruyffista - the young lawyer of Johan Cruyff) became president. His right-hand man Sandro Rosell became vice-president and immediately set about using his connections to renew the squad. Laporta’s team of young professionals, determined to bring the club into the 21st century, was a breath of fresh air in an institution that badly needed it.
Johan Cruyff’s promotion of young players from Barcelona’s academy to form essentially a new team in 1996 didn’t go so well that time, but Cruyff’s innovative approach to youth development did change Barca for the better.
In the dawning days of Laporta’s revolution Barca’s homegrown players got together and made a pact. They were sick of winning nothing, of foreign star players being indulged and locker room chaos. They agreed that from then on, they would rule the side. This agreement sowed the seeds for one of the best teams ever. The key figures of this group were two young Catalans, Carles Puyol and Xavi Hernandez.
Rijkaard’s new team started the 2003-04 season appallingly but he managed to hang on and turn results around by mid-season.
Barca finished second, one place above the Real Madrid Galacticos, and Ronaldinho became a massive fan favourite. More than anything else, the amount of fun he seemed to have showcasing his skills on the pitch brought a sense of joy back to the Camp Nou at long last.
So the young, energised and modern board had finished second - but Laporta and Rosell fell out over who should have the final say in transfers and the role of Johan Cruyff, among other things. The conflict became bitter and personal.
In the season after that (04-05), Barca signed Deco and Samuel Eto'o, completing the Rijkaard template. A team inspired by the brilliance of Ronaldinho, the flair and bite of Deco and the lethal finishing of Eto'o finally pulled it together to win the league after five seasons of nothing.
Bitter break up and the aborted start of an era: Laporta and Rosell
Despite the success, vice-president Sandro Rosell resigned from the board at the end of the season, citing broken promises and inability to work with president Laporta. From being friends and partners with Laporta to sworn enemies in the space of a few years, the spectacular break-up of their friendship has shaped Barca ever since. From that day onwards, Rosell worked to bring Laporta down (and was eventually elected president in 2010).
To be entirely fair, there's plenty to dislike about Laporta.
Sid Lowe wrote in October of 2005:
“[Laporta is a] paranoid football president who thinks he’s a national one. [It] emerged that director Alejandro Echevarría (and Laporta’s brother-in-law!) is a member of the Fundación Nacional Francisco Franco - an organisation dedicated to the former dictator who ruled Spain with an iron fist for almost forty years. Having a director who's a member of the FNFF is a bit of downer for a club whose self-identity is all about Catalanisme, democracy and opposition to Franco. “Echevarría is not, never was and never will be a member of the Fundación," [Laporta] insisted. Not the brightest decision ever - after all Barça could always claim that their democratic identity means that anyone, however politically embarrassing, can join up, whereas lying leaves no way back when the evidence is suddenly [presented].”
Almost as embarrassing, in fact, as Laporta's ludicrous claim that: "Echevarría can't possibly be a Francoist because he was only 10 when Franco died". And this guy's a lawyer, for Christ's sake.”
However, after this revelation supporters didn’t hound Laporta too much at a game… “thanks not least to 18-year-old Argentinian Leo Messi - yet another New Maradona, except that he might actually be up to the task and he's the only one named after a Mr Man”, Lowe’s first mention of him.
Laporta also was furious with Pique for joining United at 17 - he vowed he’d never return (and of course changed his mind four years later).
The following season (05-06) was even better. The introduction of the fearsome frontline of Ronaldinho-Eto'o-Messi gave Barca new weapons to break teams down with. Leo broke into the first team with a bang, with electrifying performances against Juventus, Real Madrid, and especially Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Barca finished the season by winning a double, with the Champions League trophy returning to Barcelona after 14 years away.
Many of the nice things we heard about Guardiola’s team were being said about Rijkaard’s, back then. Barca had the best player in the world in Ronaldinho and the upcoming superstar in Messi. It was supposed to be the beginning of an era.
Decline: But Messi
By 06-07, things started to go wrong. That’s the problem with winning: no matter how driven you are, everyone’s less hungry after they’ve eaten.
Ronaldinho was joyful but never that driven. Whatever the reason, Ronaldinho, who had always liked a party, fell so far into an unprofessional lifestyle that he began to miss training sessions.
Eto'o got a serious injury, and fell out very publicly with Ronaldinho over the latter’s preferential treatment, general laziness and the fact that the club were committed to protecting his reputation with lies. This feud went all the way up to the boardroom - Rosell had very strong connections with Ronnie’s people, and Laporta and Eto'o were at this stage still pals.
While all around him floundered, supporters increasingly pinned all their hopes on the injury-prone but brilliant 19-year-old Messi. Leo scored a hattrick against Madrid in March 2007, one for every goal Barca let in at the other end. If he could have dragged Barca to the title, he would have. But his body kept betraying him.
Almost inevitably, Barca drew 2-2 with local rivals Espanyol at home during the second to last round, all but handing the title to Madrid.
At the start of 07-08, Barcelona finally ended a long-running and by then farcical transfer saga by signing Thierry Henry from Arsenal. (This combination of words will become annoyingly familiar.)
Henry was welcomed like a hero and immediately had to fill in for Eto'o because the latter suffered another serious injury in pre-season. He struggled to fit in, unfit and desperately missing his daughter.
The slackness that had crept into the team the season before became painfully apparent, especially when it came to Deco and Ronaldinho, two of the team’s key players. For fans who kept faith with Ronnie and with the reassurances of the club’s own media, it was a shock to read in reputable papers stories about him missing about 50% of the scheduled training sessions and partying away his evenings. Rijkaard had finally had enough and began to leave him out of match squads, using fitness as an excuse.
All this came to a head when fellow Brazilian Edmilson gave a rant about there being 'black sheep’ in the locker room. You can imagine the press feeding frenzy that followed. Frank Rijkaard, whose players loved him for treating them like adults, was too distracted by family problems of his own to sort out an increasingly lazy, disaffected and conflict-ridden locker room. And so on it went.
In May, Barca faced the ugly prospect of having to give Madrid, who were already champions, a guard of honour at the Bernabeu. Rather than have to do this, Deco and Eto'o both earned what looked like deliberate yellow cards in the game immediately before the Clasico, enabling them to miss the game. This really pissed the fans off, sealed Deco’s fate and led to Eto'o falling out with Laporta.
Immediately after a 4-1 defeat to Madrid, Laporta sacked Rijkaard in a transparent attempt to save his own skin. The club finished third place, 18 points off Madrid. The entorno (”environment”, Cryuff’s word for the combination of media, former players/managers, power brokers and fanbase that makes Barca such a special basketcase) was in complete uproar, torn apart by disagreements and infighting.
As writer Phil Ball said at the end of 07-08: “Barcelona will want to sleep for a while, but hope that the nightmares cease. Adversity builds the character, and they can only hope to bury the negatives, take the few positives, and learn from their mistakes.”
The Fairytale Years: Pep Guardiola
President Joan Laporta remained a canny political operator in crisis mode. He knew that the continuation of his presidency hinged on making the right managerial appointment. In this task he was guided, as always, by his guru and idol Johan Cruyff, and by sporting director and ex-Dream Team player Txiki Begiristain.
Rijkaard’s replacement? Pep Guardiola.
Pep Guardiola had returned in 2007 to the club of his life where he’d been ballboy, trainee, player, captain and symbol to manage Barca’s B team, which had just suffered the indignity of relegation to the murky depths of the 4th division (this is even a parallel to how badly Xavi’s Qatar team is doing!). All his friends had told him that it was a potential career and reputation ruiner, and to stay away. But he knew what he had to do.
In desperation, and perhaps remembering an exchange a year earlier where Guardiola had expressed his willingness and readiness to take on the Barca job next year, Laporta now turned to Guardiola. In response, he got a list of demands.
Guardiola might have been taking on his first senior job, but he knew Barca. He knew he needed real power if anything was going to change, and he knew the board needed him to rally the fanbase. They gave him what he wanted, including the assistants and physios he named, Tito Vilanova as his second in command, an end to opening training sessions, and moving first team training away from the Camp Nou. From the day of his appointment, the power balance inside Barca changed.
The day after the appointment was announced, two club members launched a censure motion against the board, essentially a vote of no confidence. The campaign was hard-fought and dirty, accusations of Sandro Rosell’s involvement abounded, and Laporta emerged intact by the skin of his neck. The Guardiola maneuvre had saved him. For now.
Next came a painful clear-out. 7 members of the first team departed, including Ronaldinho and Deco, two key members of the Barca team that won a double just 2 years ago. They were replaced by a number of not high ticket but highly astute signings, the pick of which were young former La Masia defender Gerard Pique and rightback and all-around dynamo Dani Alves.
Guardiola looked at Rijkaard’s squad and saw a good team in its bones, even if it was in need of a refresher. He set about doing this by making sure that the key members of his new team were on board.
Unsettled players like Henry and Gudjohnsen were brought back into the fold, and most importantly Guardiola forged a quick and unbreakable bond with Leo Messi by taking his side in the absurd dispute between Messi and the club over his participation in the 2008 Olympics. Unlike the board, Guardiola saw that the club’s best interests were served in the long term by keeping Messi happy, rather than pissing him off over a short term conflict. (Sound familiar?) He made sure he was an ally to Messi from the beginning, invested in his development as a player and a person.
With the departure of Ronaldinho, the club captaincy was now held by four La Masia grads who had all been around for a good while (Carles Puyol, Xavi, Victor Valdes and Andres Iniesta). At the beginning of the season, the squad included 11 homegrown players, a state of affairs not seen in Barca for some time. The rumoured La Masia pact was coming to fruition, in the hands of a manager who would turn Barca into a team centred around homegrown talent.
Guardiola was in a good position to evaluate whether any of his former charges at the B team were ready for the first team. He chose two seemingly unremarkable kids and began starting them over more established and popular players. Far from welcoming this initiative, criticism and skepticism were the predominate initial responses, which Guardiola blithely ignored.
The two kids were Pedro, who went on to play a major part in Barca’s trophy haul of the next 7 years, and… Sergio Busquets.
Most significantly, Pep Guardiola saw from the very beginning that young Leo Messi was the key component of his new team. He made sure that they understood each other, and rather than simply paying lip service to his importance, he continuously devised tactical changes to maximise Messi’s potential. The most significant of these changes was having Messi interchange with Eto’o and spend more time in the central no 9 role.
Pep had turned a demoralised rabble into something nobody could have ever anticipated. He had arrived with absolutely clear ideas of how he wanted the team to play, and he only needed to convince his players to buy into the high intensity pressing/passing game.
Barcelona entered into a swap deal with Inter in July 2009 to exchange Eto’o and a very large pile of cash for Zlatan Ibrahimovic. It was not a popular decision and at the time, Pep Guardiola famously explained away this decision by saying there was a lack of “feeling” between him and the Cameroonian. While the two of them had gotten off to perhaps the worst possible start (with Guardiola declaring that he wanted to sell Eto’o in 2008 and then changing his mind) and there had been hints of tension between these too-honest men during the season, this explanation didn’t stand up entirely to scrutiny even then.
The truth, as is often the case with Barca, was a lot more murky and complicated. The driving force behind the swap deal was two-fold. The first was the board. Laporta had previously been close to Eto’o but fell out with him over the way he ruled himself out for the memorably awful Madrid game in April 2008. The other person who had ruled himself out that day by getting deliberately booked, Deco, was cast off by Barca in 2008, while Eto’o bought himself another season by staving off interest from other clubs with his wage demands and performing well enough to convince Guardiola to give him a chance.
The board also had complicated financial imperatives for wanting rid of Eto’o. They pushed for him to go even more than Guardiola did, a fact which is completely forgotten now, because everyone was happy to let Guardiola take the blame at the time.
Then Zlatan came but ultimately Pep couldn’t make him work with the squad. Pep decided that Messi needed to play in the middle, and having tried and failed to make that work with Ibra, he knew that Ibra had to go.
Bitter Break Up Continues: Laporta and Rosell
In 2010, Laporta finished up his 2 terms as president of Barca. He was replaced by his ex-friend Sandro Rosell, who had spent the years since their falling out trying to unseat him by whatever means necessary.
Sandro Rosell’s entire presidency was about not being Joan Laporta. Laporta expanded membership and embraced globalism, so he used xenophobic justifications to restrict it to locals only. Using some creative accounting, he accused Laporta of nearly bankrupting the club and used the alleged state of the finances to justify a policy of austerity and introduce a paid shirt sponsor for the first time in the club’s history. Laporta was a rabid Cruyffista who had made Cruyff the honorary president of the club; Rosell stripped Cruyff of this position almost immediately.
In 2013, Barcelona’s radical ultras Boixos Nois returned to the Camp Nou - Laporta had banned them.
Rosell used the club as a tool to further his epic vendetta, going so far as to orchestrate an extraordinary lawsuit filed by the club against Laporta and his board for alleged financial mismanagement. (A lawsuit which was thrown out by the courts.)
Guardiola was wary of Rosell from the start. He did not approve of the lawsuit against Laporta and publicly said so. Worse, one of the first things Rosell did was to sell Dmytro Chygrynskiy against Guardiola’s wishes, citing the club’s need for cash. When Pep asked Rosell for squad reinforcements, particularly in defence, stories surfaced in the board-friendly media about how Pep didn’t want more signings because he wanted a smaller squad. This forced Guardiola into talking about the need for reinforcements in public.
Pep had gone through the same routine with Laporta in 2009. The difference there being that Laporta buckled and signed the defender Pep was after. Rosell never did.
"The way [Barca] is organised, there are only two options: either you’re the power or you aren’t the power. And, against my wishes, I have been forced to pick sides.” - Pep Guardiola to Marti Perarnau
Even during Laporta’s presidency, it could be argued that he was having to do too much, in part because others were doing too little. But at least Laporta was biddable, and they largely agreed on major issues.
With Rosell, there was either disagreement or a general deafening silence
In February 2011, Barca lost 2-1 to Arsenal in the first leg of their Champions League last 16 matchup. The furore that followed was typical Barca: it was the end of the world, this team was worse than the previous versions, this team was never any good, Messi and Iniesta were over the hill, Barca was in crisis. Pep asked for time because he knew his players.
In 1992, Cruyff’s Barcelona, with Pep in midfield, had won Barca’s first Champions League at Wembley Stadium. 19 years later, a team built on Cruyffista principles by Guardiola had come back to Wembley to close the circle.
In 2014, president Rosell resigned in disgrace over multiple scandals. He was replaced (unelected) by vice president Bartomeu.
The Beginning of the End: Bartomeu
In 2015, things went off the rails, despite the eventual result.
Club boards survive by putting up scapegoats. The board fired sporting director Zubizarreta - his assistant, one Carles Puyol, resigned his position. The Court of Arbitration for Sport confirmed FIFA’s sanction for Barca’s clear breach of the Transfer Regulations. Messi followed Chelsea on Instagram.
The local media reported some sort of conflict between Messi and manager Luis Enrique, along the lines of the locker room unrest rumours which were running wild since Barca lost to Madrid. There were further rumours that Luis Enrique had to be talked out of initiating disciplinary action against Messi by the other three captains (Xavi, Iniesta and Busquets). Local media fanned the flames of a supposed Messi v Enrique conflict and suggested that Enrique’s hiring was all Zubizarreta’s idea. One section of the local media was effectively in bed with the board.
The Rosell/Bartomeu board saw many instances of misconduct such as the Qatar shirt deal, the Neymar deal, breaking its promise to renew Eric Abidal’s contract after his illness, the failed lawsuit against the former board, secret deals signed with banned and fascist ultra groups, firing and reshuffling members of the medical and technical team against the wishes of the players, repeatedly misleading members about the state of Barca’s finances before and after 2010.
And finally: stealthily changing the bylaws so that anybody wishing to initiate a vote of no confidence against the board had to gather the signatures of 15% of all members in 5 days, instead of just 5%.
The FIFA ban was the first time they were rattled, and then Messi was on their back, which is the one thing they can’t survive, coupled with bad results. Bartomeu then called an election for later that year in January.
Of course, then the results got better in 2015 and they won everything.
By the time of the election in July 2015 this was no longer the case due to their success. Laporta was running against Bartomeu (Of the signatures Laporta needed to collect to stand, Cruyff’s support for him was not registered). Guardiola, Cruyff and Abidal all publicly supported Laporta. Bartomeu won.
Current situation
The central conflict that everything to do with Barca has revolved around for the past 30+ years is Cruyff v Nunez. They’re both dead now but that hasn’t changed a thing about the persistence of the conflict. The “modern” version of this conflict began with the rift between then-president Joan Laporta (Cruyffista) and then-VP Sandro Rosell in the 00s. The current board is a continuation of Rosell’s presidency, which began in 2010. Rosell’s presidency was controversial for many many reasons, among them his board’s open conflict with Pep Guardiola both during and after Guardiola’s extremely successful tenure as manager. The current president became president because Rosell resigned in disgrace and then had his position confirmed thanks to Luis Enrique’s on field success. Oh, and because his board sneakily changed the rules to make it harder to get rid of them. The board has repeatedly clashed with Leo Messi, both by members of the board making really dumb public statements and through their proxies in the local press. every time the fans become unhappy with the board they repeat the magic trick of firing someone else to take the heat off.
The board has treated Messi poorly for so long, making him a scapegoat in the morning and a saviour in the afternoon, taking it for granted that he wouldn’t want to leave.

2020.08.20 15:13 skywardsword596 [OC] The European Resurrections of Ever Banega

Hi soccer! Ahead of tomorrow's Europa League final I wanted to write this as a little tribute to Ever Banega, who will be playing his last game in European competition for Sevilla against Inter. Please note that as I wanted to focus on his European career, I did not cover a lot of his time in Argentina with Boca and Newell's. Hope you enjoy!

It seems fitting that Ever Banega’s final bow in European competition will be in the Europa League. Regardless of the result, and barring a surprise reversal in the future, the 2020 Europa League final will be Banega’s last match ahead of a move to six-time champions Al-Shabab in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. He will depart Europe after playing for 3 different Spanish clubs, spending just over a year at Inter Milan, winning 2 Europa Leagues , and a Copa del Rey triumph. But it very nearly didn’t turn out that way...

A Crazy Goat’s Valencian welcome
Fresh off of Boca Juniors’ 2007 Libertadores triumph, where he started both legs of the final against Gremio, the 19-year-old, shaggy-haired Banega was Ronald Koeman’s first January signing at Valencia, making his debut as a half-time substitute at Atletico Madrid in a 0-1 defeat.
Valencia wasn’t an ideal scenario. Banega did manage to win a Copa del Rey, assisting Juan Mata in the quarterfinals against Atleti, but Koeman’s tenure was defined by his attempt to clear the veterans out of one of Spain’s biggest clubs (does this sound familiar?) After the Dutchman was sacked for Voro (not for the last time), Banega didn’t make the substitute’s bench until the last two matchweeks.
Banega was far from blameless, either. It wasn’t too long ago that he was one of the Argentina U-20 internationals who celebrated their World Cup win by trashing their hotel and intelligently deciding to video it (other names in that squad, by the way: Sergio Aguero, Angel Di Maria, and Papu Gomez) He had his first encounter with Spanish police only a few weeks into his stint at Valencia, leaping a red light at 3:30 a.m. while over the limit, and his already under-pressure club had to deal with the small matter of a webcam and some indecent exposure from his time at Boca. A TV segment found a fridge full of beer and nothing else, and he managed to short-circuit his Ferrari 458 Toro, setting it on fire.
Valencia decided that their young midfielder would be best served in someone else’s care, and that someone else was Atletico Madrid, who picked up Banega on loan a day after they made it to the Champions League group stages. Banega’s contract contained 2 clauses: an option to buy, and a no-going-out clause.
Unfortunately, clauses had no effect on Banega, whom Atleti insiders would refer to as a cabra loca, a crazy goat. He hit the town five nights in a row, got sent off twice in 5 league games (becoming Atleti’s season leader in red cards), and despite getting more games than he had in Valencia, he became decidedly second-choice behind Paulo Assuncao and Raul Garcia in the Atleti midfield. His Champions League debut was nothing special either - only completing one full game, a goalless draw against Marseille, and not even being named in the squad for Atleti’s round-of-16 elimination at the hands of Porto.

The First Resurrection
Banega returned to the Valencia squad, still headed by Koeman’s replacement Unai Emery. Valencia had a series of stars they wanted to keep hold of, including David Silva, David Villa, and Juan Mata, but Banega was not among them. As Sid Lowe put it:
"Forget Madrid and Barcelona and Juventus, the teams that came for Banega were Napoli and Stuttgart and Marseille. And forget €40m, or €20m, or even the €10m buyout clause on his contract. The offers that came for Banega weren't much higher than €8m. Yet when it came to the Argentinian, Valencia decided to say yes."
But the midfielder refused to leave, and his intensity in training, and indeed his first few matches of the 2009-2010 La Liga season, caused Marca columnist Jose Luis Hurtado to declare that Valencia’s wild child “had a facelift - in his brain.” Banega’s return, against his future club Sevilla, saw him tee up Juan Mata’s first goal at the top of the area, before a bursting run through midfield and a slick pass set up Pablo Hernandez for the second. He grabbed his first goal for Valencia, 2 years after signing for them, in a Valencian derby against Villareal, set up by Villa and Silva.
Ever Banega debut goal(apologies for the quality, mid-2000s La Liga clips are hard to find)
In the space of a season, Banega made himself indispensable to the club that wanted him out only a few months before. He became Valencia’s top assist provider, the creative pivot at the base of Emery’s midfield next to Carlos Marchena, and the team finished 3rd with 71 points, something of an achievement when the top 2 were pushing 100.
So what changed? Some credit his girlfriend, whom Lowe described as a “sergeant major,” for getting him to knuckle down. And perhaps he really didn’t want to go to Everton, where Valencia had been trying to offload him on loan. But Banega had his own take:
"This year, I'm starting from scratch," he said. "I arrived at 19 and made mistakes. I wasted two years and have thought about things. Now I hardly ever go out."
It should be noted that this indiscipline never quite left; Banega was reprimanded for showing up drunk to a Valencia training session later on, and only a few months ago was photographed breaking lockdown with a few of his Sevilla teammates to hold a pool party.
Banega’s 2010-2011 season was a little less lustrous; though in fairness, Valencia themselves were a little less lustrous after the departures of Villa and Silva. The club managed to end up with the exact same points total and position as the season before, though following the departures it became Juan Mata’s turn as chief creator, with Banega now partnering Hedwiges Maduro, club legend David Albelda, and new signing Mehmet Topal in midfield. The Argentine missed the start of the season, including Valencia’s opening Champions League matches, with an ankle injury, and his overall contributions were also on the downward from the season before.
Banega would probably like to forget his 2011-2012 season, but unfortunately, the cause of his many absences is the unforgettable stuff of legend among self-inflicted injuries up there with Enrique Romero playing snake charmer and Cani drinking piss. To make a long story short - Banega got run over. By his own car. With no one at the wheel!
In fairness, it looked quite painful, a season-ending tibia-fibula break and ankle fracture, and Valencia duly only told the minimum to the press. But they found out anyways: Banega had forgotten to set the handbrake at the gas station, and when his car ended up rolling, he reacted the only way a young man in the street would when he sees something rolling at him: by attempting to stop it with his foot. At least, unlike Canizares, Banega wouldn’t miss a World Cup for miscontrolling this pass.
No, he would miss it for other reasons. Emery departed, with the ire of Valencia fans at his back, to be replaced by Mauricio Pellegrino, who barely utilized him until matchday 11. It wasn’t until Pellegrino’s replacement, Ernesto Valverde, that Banega was able to perform to levels approaching his 2011 form, and a side featuring Roberto Soldado, Jonas, Sofiane Feghouli, and a young talent named Aly Cissokho managed to claw their way back to 5th place.
But off-field issues began to set in at Los Che. Valverde would not return for the 2013/2014 season, due mostly to issues with the club’s unstable finances, which in turn triggered the resignation of longtime president Manuel Llorente. Successor Miroslav Dukic’s reign sent the club plummeting towards the relegation places. His replacement Juan Antonio Pizzi was able to restore some dignity to Valencia’s season, bringing them to 8th place and the Europa League semifinals, where they fell to eventual champions Sevilla. But Banega would not be there, having returned to his native Rosario to play for Newell’s Old Boys on loan. Banega would miss out on another World Cup, watching from the sidelines as Argentina finished 2nd.

Resurging in Seville and European success
Shortly after that international heartbreak, Banega returned to Europe, and more importantly to Unai Emery, whom he credited as the driving factor to move to Seville. The 26-year-old was usually installed in the attacking role his old Valencia teammates Silva and Mata occupied, surrounded by speedy attackers Carlos Bacca, Gerard Deulofeu, and Vitolo and braced by sturdy defensive midfielders Gregorz Krychowiak and Stephane Mbia. With the newfound freedom that this role provided, Banega was able to demonstrate some of his now-trademark plays, such as dropping deep almost to the defensive line to pick up and distribute the ball, and running the midfield as its engine.
Sevilla’s sturdy home record and inconsistent away record led the club to 5th place, while they captured their second consecutive Europa League - and Banega’s first - against Ukrainian side Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk. In the following season, he was not able to impact the Andalucian’s hopes in the Champions League, although he did grab his first goals in the competition, 7 years after his debut, against Gladbach en route to a 3rd placing in the group and a return to the Europa League.

Life in Lombardy
Despite claiming his second European title, Banega would not remain at Sevilla beyond the season. President Jose Castro Carmona wanted more progress in Europe, and his choice of manager, Jorge Sampaoli, sanctioned Banega’s departure to Internazionale on a free transfer.
Banega arrived once more to a club in turmoil. Roberto Mancini, who had authorized his arrival, had departed before the season began. Frank de Boer, his replacement, would lead Inter through a torrid Europa League campaign before his early departure and replacement by Stefano Pioli.
For his part, Banega’s adaptation to Italian football wasn’t the worst. Despite a silly second yellow against Juventus, he was able to set up Mauro Icardi’s equalizer before Ivan Perisic grabbed the winner, and he got his own first goal in a defeat to Roma. Both de Boer and Pioli maintained him in the #10 role, again surrounding him with runners in Perisic, Marcelo Brozovic, and Antonio Candreva. Still, his place in the starting XI became less consistent due to the presence of Brozovic and Joao Mario as the season went on, barring a short period where he grabbed 4 goals and 3 assists in 2 thrashings of Cagliari and Atalanta, with the latter being his first career hat-trick.

The Third Resurrection in Seville
The homecoming hero was Sevilla’s first signing of the 17/18 season, with compatriot Eduardo Berizzo securing his services for 9 million euros. He made his return to Spain in the best possible way, receiving a second booking after telling the referee exactly what he thought of his first: https://youtu.be/epUTbp6UMyI?t=94
As with Emery, Berizzo opted to use Banega either as an attacking midfielder or as one of the two advanced midfielders in his 4-2-3-1 and 4-1-4-1 systems. However, when Vincenzo Montella took over in December, Banega was moved into a role similar to his old role at Valencia, where he set the tempo next to Steven N’Zonzi, while Franco Vazquez and Pablo Sarabia took his place as advanced creators. Consequently, Banega was not able to register as many goals or assists as he contributed for Emery’s Sevilla, but was able to steady a team that was dealing with the upheavals of a new squad and coach.
Banega did have perhaps his finest hour in the Champions League yet, as Sevilla made it all the way to the quarterfinals. In the round-of-16 match against Manchester United, Banega and N’Zonzi effectively overran Jose Mourinho’s midfield, and the Argentine was involved in the buildup to Wissam Ben Yedder’s goals at Old Trafford.
The Portuguese took some time to deliver some praise in classic indirect style:
“I cannot name them. If I name them their agents will jump with happiness and they will say: ‘Tag, tag, price’, this and that. In Sevilla, there are many players who would play in my team.”
Unfortunately for Banega and Sevilla, they could not deliver on this promise in the following season. Pablo Machin took the reigns at Sevilla but proved unsuited to do so. Despite Banega putting up career-best numbers, with 8 goals and 11 assists in all competitions, Sevilla fell early in the Copa del Rey and Europa League, and were only able to limp to 5th place under Joaquin Caparros. Banega also had his worst season in terms of on-field discipline, picking up 2 yellow-card-accumulations, and 2 sendings-off, the latter of which saw him miss the final 3 games of the season.

The Lopetegui era
Julen Lopetegui, eager to rebuild some of his reputation following his sacking from both the Spain and Madrid jobs in a calendar year, signed on at Sevilla in the summer of 2019. The club would sell on Wissam Ben Yedder to Monaco and Sarabia to Paris Saint-Germain, but as is life under sporting director Monchi, new blood arrived to partner Banega in midfield, attack, and defense, such as Lucas Ocampos, Joan Jordan, Diego Carlos and Jules Kounde. After an inconsistent beginning, Lopetegui quickly figured out his best team, and the Andalucians became one of the toughest teams to beat in La Liga, returning to the Champions League via the league for the first time since 2017, though Banega will not return for that campaign.
Banega is not the kind of midfielder to astonish you with a dribble or a long range goal, or to lead the goalscoring charts, but watching him run Sevilla’s midfield shows all the talent that led Boca Juniors to declare him the heir to Fernando Gago, that has Unai Emery desperately trying to sign him everywhere he goes, and why both Guardiola and Mourinho have marked him as the opposition man to beat. In Lopetegui’s system, he has license to roam from just in front of the back line to the edge of the opponent’s penalty area, though he tends to favor the left side, where he can combine with Ocampos and Sergio Reguilon, as demonstrated in the match against Roma. A set-piece specialist, he will also be Sevilla’s main threat when they win fouls or corners. No Sevilla player creates more shooting actions per 90, and only 4 La Liga players in general created more this season. And when it comes to passing under pressure, only Jesus Navas outdoes him (both are top 10 in La Liga for this metric).
Ever Banega 19/20 heat map (via SofaScore)
Banega will not imagine a sweeter send-off than a third Europa League. A player whose European career nearly ended before it started by his own doing was able to reform and return to the game’s biggest stages. He might not have reached the heights his Boca midfield predecessors did when they came to Europe, but he has certainly written his name into Spanish football history.

                                                    X_________________X_________________X
"I've never felt magic that strong, Seles. It was terrifying. And all of the sudden, it was an inferno. It was as if Ezra had lost her mind and then detonated the resulting magic."
Ezra groaned. The voices were far too loud in the room. "Shut up," the inquisitor choked past a parched, aching throat.
Ada jumped at the noise. "Ezra! You're awake! How is your head?" The knight was already fetching water. She was not surprised by the answer that came.
"Feels like someone hit it with a tree."
"That would be you," a second voice said. Ezra cracked an eyelid. Seles stood against the wall on the far side of the room. His bow was leaned casually against his knee, a quiver of arrows stowed within reach on a table nearby. His hood was back, the green cloth bunching around chocolate waves. "I heard you got a bit excited in the woods again, dear. I thought I asked you to be more careful?"
Ezra groaned once more, forcing herself into a sitting position despite the wave of dizziness. She graciously accepted the water Ada handed her before leveling a glare that could shear through mountains at Seles. "I will fucking skin you, ranger boy."
The hunter only laughed, Ada joining in with a chuckle. "If you say so, oh scary demon of the night."
Ezra's hand instinctively reached for a knife. Instead, it brushed against thin silk. She glanced down and found herself in a nightgown that was a bit small. "Ada why am I in your clothes again?"
"Well yours were absolutely drenched in blood. It looked like you'd been skinning a corpse with how soaked your sleeves were. And a head wound did your collar no favors either." As the knight stepped closer to Seles, a folded set of clothes came into view. Everything visible to Ezra was the maroon of dried blood.
"How long was I out?" The inquisitor sipped her water, a glare resting on the pile of her ruined gear. "And where the fuck are my knives Ada?"
After a few moments of laughing, Ada lifted a collection of belts lined with sheaths. Each sheath held a knife or dagger of various makes and styles. Some were even rusty or shoddily crafted. Ezra shook her head and swung her legs out of the bed. She sighed as she stood, seeing the nightgown barely cover her thighs. "Ada you're too short for me to borrow your clothes."
Seles looked away, chuckling as Ezra glared at him. He at least had the dignity to look chagrined at the situation. With a smile on his lips still, the ranger left the room, murmuring something to Ada that caused her to blush.
"I'll go get you some clothes, Ezra, hold tight for a few minutes." Ada followed Seles out, closing the door with a muffled thud.
The inquisitor smirked at the pair, muttering about children and their young love. As she sat, the terse woman considered the events of the night before. So much blood. So much beautiful scarlet blood. And the agony on his face as I tore into his chest. Ezra chuckled. Damn lucky Ada screamed too. I'd be in something deep if she'd seen what I'd done to that noble boy. Another image flashed through her mind, this time of his corpse catching fire, becoming dust and ash even as the flames spread outwards. Quite a number, that work.
A thud brought the inquisitor out of her reverie. Ezra shook her head to clear the images that hung in front of her eyes. Ada stood in front of the door, a pile of clothes in hand and cheeks glowing scarlet. "Have a nice walk with Seles, did you?"
Ada flung the clothes at her friend, shooting the older woman a glare. It was ignored. “So what happened last night, Ez?” Ada had the dignity to wait until the inquisitor was mostly dressed before the questions broke through. “He blinded us, you went sprinting off into the woods after him, and then when I caught up there was a storm of pure magic eating at the two of you. It took nearly everything in the palace healer to close those wounds, and you were up to your elbows in blood. I thought you were dead, hell you were dying!”
Ezra sighed, sliding the blood caked belts and sheaths into place, making sure all of her knives sat comfortably before answering. When she spoke, the lies came as smooth as butter. “Two mages throwing magic at each other left and right, the air builds up a charge. In close quarters, like we were, it built that charge very quickly.” Ada nodded along.
“I took the classes as well, Ez.”
“Well, I tried to use that charge, only he managed to stun me as I did. I lost my grip on the magic, and it turned wild. Of course, we both start wrestling to get control of the storm that was brewing, but two mages can’t both stop a maelstrom. It doesn’t work. So, I stabbed him. Only he didn’t stop trying to turn the energy inwards. So, I kept stabbing him.” Ezra dropped onto the bed, her head hanging low.
“It was only a few moments between the kid finally giving up and you arriving. When I was finally able to get loose of the storm, it was too late for him. All I could do was bend the magic in a way that would stop it from growing.” Ezra trailed off.
“So you blew it all up. With Alan inside.” There was no blame or anger in Ada’s voice. Just the calm understanding of a friend.
Ezra flinched. “It was all I could do, Ada.”
“I know, Ez. I know.” The comforting tone of her voice washed over the inquisitor. Ezra looked up with a thin smile, before shoving herself to her feet.
“I need food. And a drink. A real drink,” Ezra added at her companion’s indignation. The knight shut her mouth with a snap, shaking her head bemusedly.
The crowd around Ezra jostled, shoving back and forth as they screamed at the gate. The inquisitor grunted as a particularly large man elbowed her. He turned for a moment, an apology dying on his lips as the cloaked woman shoved farther through the crowd.
As Ezra broke through the throng of people, she patted down her pockets. Thieves and pickpockets loved a crowd like that. Satisfied, she crossed the rapidly filling space at the back of King’s Plaza and into the bar sitting flush with the rest of the shops in the area.
The building was dim compared to the piercing sunlight outside, and the inquisitor stood for a moment while her eyes adjusted. When she could finally see clearly, Ezra stalked to the far end of the bar, well away from any other patrons, of which there were few.
“What’ll it be, Ez?” The bartender had a gruff voice and a personality to match.
“A First Kill and an ale, Gill.” Ezra tapped her fingers as she waited. When the drinks arrived, she slid her payment over to the man with a nod.
“Safe to assume you’re the reason for all the ruckus outside my front door?”
Ezra shrugged, downing the rancid drink in a singular gulp. “Kid had it coming.”
“And you enjoyed it. Win-win as far as you’re concerned.” His words were matter of fact.
“I won’t feel sorry for what I do, Gill. Gods and Kings be damned, I kill if I have to.”
“You kill if you feel like you have to, Ezra. And it’s going to get you in a lot of trouble one day.”
“I didn’t come here for a damn lecture, old man, I came here to drink.” Ezra chugged her ale and gestured at the empty cup. “And I’m out of drink.”
Gill shook his head, pouring Ezra another ale and walking away.
Ezra sat over her drink, staring at the deep brown bubbles. He’s right though. If I don’t get my shit together, I’m going to get caught. And if that happens, well fuck, I might as well go wild at that point.
The thud of the front door caught Ezra’s attention. As did the familiar gait of steel boots.
“Ada,” Ezra murmured as the footsteps stopped right behind her. “Need something?”
“The King wishes to speak with you.”
“King can kindly wait for me to finish my ale.” The inquisitor took a slow sip from her drink, setting it softly back on the bar.
“Ezra, there’re calls for your death. Alan Grayriver was a respected member of the community.”
“He was a murderer. You know it, I know it, and Lord Helias knows it.”
“They’re saying the same of you. You do tend to kill people you should be questioning you know.”
Gill chuckled at that, and Ezra shot him a look. “She’s not wrong little missy,” the gray-haired man chimed in.
“Gill I will burn your bar to the ground with you inside,” Ezra growled.
“My point exactly, Ezra! You have a temper and it’s led to several suspects being killed before their trial. The King’s patience wanes.” Ada stood with her arms crossed, her booted foot tapping out a steady beat.
Ezra finally turned to look at her partner. “The King only cares about this death because it was a noble. Any other common bastard or poor servant girl and he’d give it the same dismissive wave he always does.” Ezra finished her drink quickly. “Don’t give me this shit about his patience waning at my antics when we both know he’s tired of dealing with those stuffy ass lords he has to keep around.” The inquisitor stalked towards the door; a frown etched into her face.
“Are you going then?” Ada was hesitant to ask.
Ezra turned to her friend and nodded, her frown deepening. “If they try to hang me for this Ada, I will not go. They will have to kill me in that room or track me across the country before I go peacefully.” She stomped out the door before Ada could respond, her scowl cutting a path through the crowd as soon as any caught sight of it. This will not go well whatsoever.

A free transfer arrival from Oxford United last summer, Nelson is now a well-established partner to Sean Morrison at the heart of the City defence.

  2. Vaulks vs Blackburn (H) (38.2%)
  3. Tomlin vs West Brom (H) (8.8%)
The comeback goal at Leeds to equalise at 3-3 was your Goal of the Season. Glatzel calmly tucking the ball home after an incredible backheel volleyed assist from Lee Tomlin.

  1. Cardiff City 2-0 Leeds United (44.1%)
  2. Leeds United 3-3 Cardiff City (41.2%)

  1. Joe Ralls (76.5%)
  2. Junior Hoilett (14.7%)
  3. Joe Bennett (8.8%)

The Brentford winger put is some magical performances. It won't be surprising if he is a Premier League player next season despite Brentford missing out on promotion.

2020.08.15 15:28 KnightOfCydonia93 Leeds United Player's Price Thoughts

Hi All
Thought I'd just give my own view on Leeds' prices. Hope you enjoy and find this helpful. Also apologies it is quite long!
Goalkeeper
I would say Meslier (4.5) is our current Number 1 GK right now. Since he’s came in to for Casilla due to suspension, he hasn’t really made many mistakes. I can’t see Casilla (4.5) staying either tbh, especially after last season’s racist remark which earned him an 8 game ban. Since the lockdown there have also been rumours of him going back to Spain. So I expect we'll be after a new GK, I'm must not sure if we'll be after a new Number 1 or backup. Miazek (4.0) is our third choice keeper.
If Meslier does turn out to be our Number 1, I do think he will be a solid option. However there are probably better options in Ryan and McCarthy.
Defence
Solid. Best CS record (22) in the top four English tiers and European’s top 5 leagues plus the Championship.
Both our wing backs push up and join in with the attacks, having a tendency to overlap. Ayling and Dallas (both 4.5) have been the most talked about on this sub and based on last season rightfully so. Ayling got 4 goals and 5 assists whilst Dallas got 5 goals and 3 assists. Dallas also has the advantage of being played further upfield. Due to this I’ve seen a lot of talk about Dallas being the best option however he also faces more competition, Alioski and Douglas.
Out of the three Dallas did play the most minutes however there is the possibility he is switched for Alioski (4.5) if we need to be more attacking. Similarly to Dallas, Alioski scored 5 goals and got 3 assists and can be used further upfield too.
Although Douglas (4.0) came last out of the three in terms of minutes played he was extremely unlucky. He was out injured for the majority of the season and when match fit he was having to replace Dallas or Alioski who were both having impressive seasons. One thing to consider is that he is our only experienced left back. If he regains his spot he'll definitely be one to watch at just 4mill.
Compare this to Ayling who’s only competition is our new signing Drameh from Fulham (currently he isn’t in the game). I honestly haven't heard much about him apart from that he gets into the England U18 team. So unless a Fulham fan can give some insight I'm expecting Ayling to start.
One downside with our defence though, is that it is looking likely we won’t have White (4.5), who didn't miss a single minute of Championship action for us. However if we do sign White (or another CB) I wouldn't recommend picking him or Cooper (4.5). Last season we were woeful at corners and being the same price as our wing backs its an easy avoid for me. One thing to note is until we bring in another CB Struijk (4.0) will probably partner Cooper. So we might have another playing 4.0 option!
Davis, LWB, and Casey, CB, (both 4.0) are very highly regarded so I’d expect them to get some minutes over the season but I wouldn’t look to bring them in at this stage.
I’m personally looking at playing it safe and opt for Ayling. However one benefit for all us FPL players is that Bielsa usually announces his teams during the press conference, so unless there’s a last minute injury he can’t ruin your weekend unlike a certain Bald Fraud.
Midfield
This is the area I think is very easy to overlook and I think there could be some good cheap options.
Before the Playoff Final there was a lot of talk about Brentford and the number of goals they scored. Leeds only scored three fewer however we created 50 more chances. If we can sign a prolific striker (and we are meant to be looking at bringing in a striker) these guys could become a great cheap option.
For me, the standout options are Harrison (5.5), Hernandez (6.0) and Klich (5.5).
Harrison - 6Gs and 8As
Hernandez - 9Gs and 9As
Klich - 7Gs 5As
Whilst Hernandez just edges Harrison out on chances created per game 2.1 vs 1.9, it was actually Harrison who created more chances across the entire season beating the Spaniard by 5 (87 - 82). However Hernandez also played 1300 fewer minutes than the English man.
As Hernandez is now 35 years old, age is starting to become a factor with injuries. I’ve seen a lot of comments saying he is now a bench player, that isn’t the case. During the restart Bielsa used him as an impact player because he was recovering from a hamstring strain. When 100% fit Hernandez starts. He’s too important for us not too. Last season our win rate was around 60% with him starting, that went down to around 30% without him.
Klich created 79 chances across with season averaging 1.8 per game. He is also our penalty taker and has a tendency of being a streaky player.
He also has an unbelievable starting record under Bielsa, starting 93 out of 94 Championship games (including play offs). The only game he didn’t start was Derby, and most of our players were still suffering from the celebrations of not only promotion but also being crowned Champions.
Costa (5.5) had a difficult first season (5Gs and 6As), only creating 47 chances (1.1 per game). However he could potentially become an option he if continues the form he started to show at the end of last season. Probably best to keep an eye on and see how he does.
Some might be asking why I haven’t mentioned Phillips (5.0) yet. That’s because he’s our CDM and when we attack he tends to fall back, becoming a third CB to allow our wing backs to join in with the attack. Quality player but not an FPL asset.
Roberts (5.0), Grot (5.0), Poveda (5.0), Shackleton (5.0), Stevens (4.5) all tend to be squad players when everyone is fit so I wouldn't recommend any really. This opinion could change for Roberts as he tends to replace Hernandez and Bamford, if either are injured. So Roberts could potentially find himself as a OOP player. With Forshaw (5.0) I'm not sure how much he will feature tbh.
I’m probably going to pick Harrison just as he’s slightly more dangerous than Klich and I’ll be looking to save money to go big in midfield. Plus if he improves the way he has under Bielsa these past two seasons those stats will only get better.
Strikers
There’s not much to really say here unfortunately. I’d avoid Bamford (5.5). I feel bad saying that as his work rate is unbelievable, it really is. However his goal scoring record? Truthfully? Not so. 16 goals from an expected 35 last season. Even if we sign a prolific striker I feel Bielsa will start Bamford for the first few games, as he tends to stick by his players.
TDLR:
Best options: Ayling, Dallas, Harrison, Hernandez and Klich
Ones to watch: Alioski, Douglas, Struijk
